The victory is very symbolic for the Taliban and it could have a devastating psychological effect for the Afghan army, whose morale is already at its lowest. The insurgents seized two towns: Zaranj and Sheberghan. They are the first provincial capitals to fall into their hands since the start of their offensive in May.
The Taliban entered Zaranj on Friday August 6, the capital of Nimroz province, in southwestern Afghanistan, without meeting “No resistance”, said Roh Gul Khairzad, the deputy governor of the province. Small town located on the border with Iran, Zaranj is worth above all for its economic importance. Its capture also allows the insurgents to control a new part of the Afghan borders.
The Taliban had previously captured several key border posts with Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Pakistan. All of them are a vital source of revenue from tariffs.
On Saturday, the insurgents also seized the city of Sheberghan, in the northwest of the country, announced to Agence France-Presse Qader Malia, vice-governor of the province of Djozdjan, of which Sheberghan is the capital. ” Forces [afghanes] and those responsible fled to the airport ”, he added.
The province of Djozdjan is the stronghold of Marshal Dostom, a powerful militia leader, renowned for his volatile loyalty and barbarism. If Sheberghan were to remain in the hands of the Taliban, it would be another setback for the government, which recently called on former warlords and various militias to try to stem the advance of the insurgents.

British nationals called to leave the country
The President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, said on Friday that the Taliban controlled the entire border between Afghanistan and his country, nearly 1,300 kilometers, at a summit bringing together heads of state of five former Central Asian Soviet republics – Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
The insurgents have seized large rural areas for three months in a lightning offensive launched in favor of the withdrawal of international forces, which must be completely completed by August 31. After encountering weak resistance in the countryside, they have been directing their offensives against the big cities for a few days, encircling several provincial capitals.
The situation has led the United Kingdom to ask all its nationals to leave Afghanistan immediately in view of a “Worsening security situation”. “All British nationals in Afghanistan are advised to leave now via means [de transport] commercial “, the British Foreign Office wrote on its website on Friday. UK authorities are advising against travel to the country and warning they are only able to provide assistance “Extremely limited”.
Targeted government officials
At a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, the UN envoy to Afghanistan, Deborah Lyons, called on the Taliban to ” to cease “ their “Attacks on cities”, asking the Council to issue a warning ” without ambiguity “.
Hours earlier, the Taliban had killed Dawa Khan Menapal, a former deputy spokesperson for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, according to the country’s interior ministry. The insurgents thus put their threat to execution, after promising on Wednesday to carry out new operations of “Retaliation” against senior government officials in response to the Afghan army’s airstrike campaign. The Afghan and American armies have carried out multiple airstrikes in recent days in an attempt to curb the advance of the Taliban on several major urban centers.

Mr. Menapal was a well-known figure in the media community in Kabul. This ex-journalist regularly attacked the Taliban on social networks, often with irony. Sediq Sediqqi, former spokesperson for the head of state, said “Deeply shocked and upset to learn that [son] friend and former colleague had been killed by the enemies of [leur] pays ».
The Taliban, who had already targeted the Minister of Defense, General Bismillah Mohammadi on Tuesday in Kabul, who came out unharmed from this attack which killed eight people, were quick to claim responsibility for the assassination.
No safe place to take refuge
The fighting also continued on Friday in Lashkar Gah, capital of Helmand province, in the south of the country, where the army launched a counterattack on Wednesday evening.
The offices of the NGO Action Against Hunger were hit there on Thursday by a “Aerial bombardment”. “The building was clearly identified as belonging to a humanitarian organization, either from the street or from the roof of the building. Moreover, its location has been communicated on several occasions to the parties to the conflict ”, underlined the NGO.
Civilians, who pay a heavy price in war, continue to attempt to flee combat zones, as the military has urged them to, but without having any safe place to seek refuge.

Ascoli Piceno, 6 August 2021 – “We have defeated this ‘great son of p …’ too! It is difficult to find words to describe how grateful I am to you for all the affection received”. One week fromheart attack that hit him, Friday 30 July, in San Benedetto del Tronto(video), Gaetano Curreri keep improving atMazzoni Hospital of Ascoli Piceno and, through the social networks, he sends a message of thanks to all those who supported and cared for him.
Curreri, who will soon be discharged, sends his message quoting the title of one of the first hits of the Stadio, ‘Great son of a bitch‘ of the 1981. Curreri, who publishes a photo of him in the room with his thumb raised, dedicates “a special thanks to a true ‘generation of phenomena’ (another song from the Stadio; ed) who promptly helped me on stage”. Finally, the singer also wanted to thank “his lifelong companions”, Roberto Drovandi e Andrea Fornili, as well as the manager Laura Cordischi.
Gaetano Curreri, how is he one week after his heart attack
“The patient continues in clinical improvement, mobilization began and recovery proceeds regularly “, says in the new medical bulletin Dr. Giancarlo Viviani, Director of the FF Medical Department of the Vast Area 5 Presidium.
The singer, frontman, composer of the Stadio, the legendary Bolognese rock band, author of numerous successes and before that an accompaniment group of Lucio Dalla, was on the stage set up in the upper town of San Benedetto, with the Soling Strinq Quartet (Vincenzo Di Donna, Luigi De Maio, Gerardo Marrone and Antonio Di Francia) performing the songs One day you will tell me, Surprise me, I’m just words, Before leaving for a long journey, A sense, in the concert which is a passionate tribute to the songwriting, which offers style and elegance, ranging to 360 degrees in the panorama of great Italian music, embellished by the numerous successes written by Curreri for the Stadio, for Vasco Rossi, Patty Pravo, Irene Grandi, Lucio Dalla and Noemi: with them there were also the bassist Roberto Drovandi and the guitarist Andrea Fornili .
They had offered moments of great interpretation and great music. Impossible not to give an encore with lots of applause, and that’s what Curreri did, not before getting rid of the jacket worn up to that moment, despite the really high temperatures that plagued the area in those days. And that’s just as he sang the song “Piazza Grande” that the singer-songwriter began to stammer, resuming the verse. It seemed that he had lost the thread of the text on the lectern, since at the beginning of the concert it was the artist himself who commented on the absolute need to use the same, due to his lack of memory.
A few seconds later, however, here he is again stammering and staggering, collapsing, immediately supported by the members of his band, who prevented the artist from falling to the ground. Then the first aid, provided by a doctor from Ascoli, dottor Mauro Mario Mariani, who was attending the concert, and those, later, of the 118 doctors who once stabilized accompanied him in self-ambulance to the Mazzoni Hospital in Ascoli Piceno, to the Cardiological Intensive Care Unit, where he was operated on the aorta by Dr. Pierfrancesco Grossi, where right from the start, he was able to meet family members, in particular his sister Gilda, who was in the audience in San Benedetto del Tronto.
Therefore, his conditions continue to improve, between the affection and good wishes that continue to reach the Bolognese singer-songwriter from friends and colleagues and from his audience on social networks, who did not fail to support the singer, urging him not to give up.

HUNTSVILLE (Ala.) — It was her first mission with NASA, and Sarah Scott could definitely feel the pressure as she directed her team on a mission to the International Space Station.
She managed to successfully lead the 12-member team through the mission and was relieved when she was no longer in charge during her week at the Advanced Space Academy at the US Space and Rocket Center in Alabama.
Her team completed several “missions,” working together to complete objectives on the ISS and missions to the moon and Mars.
Sarah said the camp was a lot of fun, and if she got the chance, she’d go again. She said she learned a lot about space, science and had a great time meeting people from outside Ohio.
“There were some things I wasn’t quite expecting, like how weird it was to be away from home for so long. But it was definitely worth it, because of all the things we got to do,” she said. “There was a lot of pressure when I was the flight director for the first mission. I had to make a lot of calls, but it was fun.”
“I sort of wish I had gotten to be outside the mission control center, but I bonded with my teammates in there. It was a blast.”
The teams of 12 would receive around one hour of training for each mission, which would last for about one hour each. Sarah said the final mission was more challenging, so it lasted longer.
“There were a lot of curveballs in the last one, with some medical anomalies thrown in. It was tough, but it felt rewarding to finish it,” she said.
The cadets also toured the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center, checking out museums and seeing presentations and lessons.
“There was an astronaut we got to meet at the end of camp, which was cool. I really liked the Saturn V rocket. There was a retired engineer that worked on the mission, and I got to ask questions,” Sarah said. “There were even some simulators, like the one where I got to pilot a plane. I liked that one, even if I crashed twice.”
Jason and Lisa, Sarah’s parents, were proud their daughter decided to go to camp. They stayed close to the center while Sarah attended, because of COVID-19 precautions. They said they visited when they could, but Sarah was busy from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Even if she was exhausted, they said she seemed like she was having fun.
“She asked us last year if she could go, and even though it was expensive, we were willing to pay for it. But she found out about scholarships and gave those a shot,” Jason said. “It was February this year when she found out she received a full ride, besides travel expenses, for the camp. That was pretty great.”
Sarah had to submit various documents for the scholarship, like her school grades, an essay about community service she’d completed during the COVID-19 quarantine, and her science project. She said she was worried she hadn’t got the scholarship because the notice took so long to get to her, but she was excited when it arrived.
“And we were happy that she went. We saw it as a win-win situation: either she’d go and have a great time and maybe learn more about what career she might want to pursue later, or she’d go and not enjoy it that much. But if that was the case, at least she’d know she didn’t want to do that kind of work later on,” Jason said. “Plus, she developed leadership skills, saw what it took to achieve her dreams, and earned that scholarship on her own.”
Sarah said she felt the program had helped her decide on a career path, landing on something in the world of science.
“I’m not exactly sure what I want to do yet, but this camp helped me see that I’d like to explore a science career, possibly in biology or in the medical field. Astronomy was fun, but I think it’d be more of a hobby,” she said. “I learned a lot through space camp, not just about space and science, but about other people and where they’re from.”
“I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who’s interested in trying out the camp.”

The fire, which killed two people, is gaining ground in Greece for the 11e day in a row, devouring forests and dwellings. At least 1,450 Greek firefighters, assisted by reinforcements from other countries, continued their fierce battle against five major fires north of Athens, on the island of Euboea, 200 kilometers east of the capital, and three fires on the Peloponnese peninsula to the west.
North of Athens, the violent fire continued to advance with vigor towards the east and Lake Marathon, the largest water reserve in the capital, after causing the evacuation of a dozen localities. Its thick fumes and pungent odor had again spread over the capital overnight, as strong winds are forecast for the day. The highway that connects Athens to the north of the country remains cut as a precaution while nearby migrant camps have been evacuated.

On the island of Evia, more than 1,300 people were evacuated by boat overnight from the coastal village of Limni, surrounded by flames. According to Greek media, more than twenty others were evacuated Saturday morning from Rovies beach, also located on this vast island in the east of the country. Local authorities have called for more air support to effectively fight the violent Evia fire.
On the Peloponnesian Peninsula, hundreds of hectares were also on fire east of the archaeological site of Olympia and in the regions of Messinia and Mani. In the latter region, more than 5,000 residents and tourists were forced to flee the disaster. Mayor Eleni Drakoulakou estimated the burnt area to the east of this mountainous and tourist region at 50%. The city councilor denounced, on Hellenic radio and television, the absence of water bombers in the critical early hours of the disaster.

The police also made two arrests on Friday afternoon, according to the Greek news agency ANA. A 43-year-old Greek man was indicted for arson after being arrested in the Krioneri area, where the fire burned down houses and businesses on Friday, according to the same source.
An Afghan woman was also arrested in a park in Athens, when the authorities banned visiting parks and forests because of the “Extreme fire danger”. The offender was in possession of two lighters, gasoline and flammable materials, according to ANA.

Editorial of the “World”. A year ago, on August 9, 2020, at the end of a campaign that had given rise to mad hope, Belarusian voters expressed their desire for change. At least that’s what the polls and independent counts at polling stations indicated. The president they wanted to leave, however, did not intend to cede a power he had held unchallenged since 1994. He falsified the results. Since then, a fierce repression fell on the citizens of this former Soviet republic who dared to express their opposition to the dictatorship of Alexander Lukashenko.
This despot survives thanks to the support of Moscow, and in particular of its political police, the FSB, which provides invaluable support to its accomplice in Minsk, the KGB, remained faithful to the original. After realizing that force was not enough to crush the massive protest, the Lukashenko regime switched to more targeted methods. In one year, more than 35,000 people were arrested and passed through Belarusian jails, where torture and ill-treatment are frequent.

The sentences are more and more severe. Journalists and intellectuals are being hunted down. Thus, one of the major figures of the protest, Maria Kolesnikova, a music teacher, was kidnapped in the middle of the street. As the police were about to deport her to neighboring Ukraine, she managed to jump out of the vehicle and tear up her passport to avoid deportation. The police then imprisoned her. His trial has just opened in Minsk; she faces twelve years in prison. The crackdown is so severe that exiled opposition leader Svetlana Tsikhanovskaya, whose husband is also in jail, has decided not to call a protest for the August 9 anniversary.
Series of sanctions
Lukashenko does not stop there. Its services are also active abroad against opponents who have fled the regime. In May, he diverted a Ryanair plane to Minsk to arrest an opposition journalist exiled in Vilnius (Lithuania) and present on board. On August 2, when a Belarusian athlete defected to Tokyo to escape a forced return after criticizing her team’s executives, another of her compatriots, Vitali Chichov, 26, was found hanged in a park in Kiev. . The young man was in charge of welcoming Belarusian refugees in Ukraine, where they would now number in the tens of thousands.

Not content with persecuting its citizens, Lukashenko turned Belarus into a rogue state on the European continent. Today, he shamelessly wields the weapon of migration: Lithuania has for weeks been faced with a massive influx of asylum seekers from Iraq, Syria and Africa who arrive through the Belarusian border after having been flown to Minsk.
The European Union (EU) must defend itself. She no longer recognizes Mr. Lukashenko as the legitimate president and has given refuge to Svetlana Tsikhanovskaïa as well as to her exiled compatriots. It also took a series of sanctions against Minsk. It must continue in this direction, favoring measures which punish those responsible for repression and penalize the regime. It is also important that the United States and the United Kingdom, where the leader of the opposition in exile has just been received at the highest level, coordinate their action with that of the EU, for more efficiency.
But neither in Brussels, nor in London, nor in Washington, we must not lose sight of the fact that, behind this regime which has become the shame of Europe, it is President Vladimir Poutine who holds, in Moscow, the key to the fate of Alexander Lukashenko.

SpaceX is teaming up with GEC. Paul Hennessy/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images
A Canadian startup told Insider it’s launching a space-ad satellite into orbit via a Falcon 9 rocket.
GEC’s CEO Samuel Reid said anyone can advertise on the satellite by buying a pixel with crypto.
The satellite’s selfie-stick will film the screen and the footage will be livestreamed on YouTube.
See more stories on Insider’s business page.
It’s not just rockets, satellites, and billionaires that are flying to space – advertising is too.
Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC), a Canadian startup that provides technology services, exclusively told Insider that it’s making space advertising possible with the help of SpaceX.
Samuel Reid, CEO and co-founder of GEC, said the company is in the process of building a satellite, called a CubeSat. One side of the satellite will have a pixelated display screen where the advertisements, logos, and art will appear, Reid said.
The company plans to load the CubeSat on to a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, which will take it into orbit and release it before the rocket reaches the moon.
Once in orbit, a selfie-stick attached to the side of the CubeSat will film the display screen. This footage will be livestreamed on YouTube or Twitch so anyone can tune in to watch the satellite’s screen, Reid said.
The CubeSat will be released in early 2021, according to Reid.
You can buy tokens for the pixels in crypto
To advertise on the CubeSat, people have to buy tokens to claim, locate, and design a pixel on the display screen.
There are five tokens to choose from – Beta for the X coordinate, Rhoe for the Y coordinate, Gamma for the brightness, Kappa for the colour, and XI for time.
With the Beta and Rhoe tokens, people can decide where to place their pixel. The Gamma and Kappa tokens allow people to control what their pixel will look like, while the XI token determines how long it will last for.
“I’m trying to achieve something that can democratize access to space and allow for decentralized participation,” Reid said. “Hopefully, people don’t waste money on something inappropriate, insulting or offensive.”
People will be able to buy the tokens with cryptocurrencies such as ethereum. In the future, GEC wants to introduce dogecoin payments.
Reid couldn’t reveal how much each token or CubeSat would cost. SpaceX didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.
Anyone can advertise on a CubeSat
Businesses, advertisers, artists, and anyone else who is interested will be able to put their illustrations on the CubeSat’s display screen, Reid said.
“There might be companies which want to depict their logo … or it might end up being a bit more personal and artistic,” Reid said. “Maybe Coca-Cola and Pepsi will fight over their logo and reclaim over each other.”
Reid imagines the CubeSat display screen to look similar to artboards such as Reddit Place and Satoshi’s Place.
How GEC teamed up with SpaceX
Reid reached out to SpaceX in 2018 to initiate the advertising project but got no reply. He said it took SpaceX a while to take GEC seriously before he eventually had a meeting at the company headquarters.
Reid taught some of Musk’s children at the billionaire’s Ad Astra school at SpaceX’s offices in California, which he said helped SpaceX to take notice of him and GEC.
Reid said he never got the chance to meet Musk in the flesh but assumes he’ll talk to him directly at some point during the project.

Blue Origin, the rocket company founded by Jeff Bezos in 2000, is being salty online after NASA snubbed it for a contract to land astronauts on the moon.
Instead, NASA chose SpaceX to put the first boots on the lunar surface since 1972. It awarded the company, which Elon Musk founded in 2002, an exclusive contract to turn its Starship vehicle into a lunar lander.
In response, Blue Origin called Starship “immensely complex and high-risk” and said NASA made the “wrong” decision. The company recently updated its website to include a graphic that compares Starship unfavorably to Blue Origin’s Blue Moon lunar lander.
Blue Origin appears to be, at minimum, cherry picking its comparisons. The graphic notes that the Starship-Super Heavy system hasn’t launched yet. Starship has launched six miles into the air on several occasions, but not with its Super Heavy booster. It also points out that SpaceX’s Starship facilities in Boca Chica, Texas have never accommodated an orbital launch. Blue Origin, though has never launched any rocket to orbit from anywhere.
The graphic doesn’t, however, note the cost of the Starship lunar lander. SpaceX’s proposal estimates that it will cost NASA $2.9 billion, while Blue Origin’s gave a price of $5.9 billion.
NASA was originally expected to award contracts to two companies, but cited a lack of funding from Congress in its decision to give SpaceX the sole contract in April. Blue Origin and Dynetics, another competitor for the contract, filed formal protests. Those complaints forced SpaceX to pause work on its Starship lunar lander.
Bezos, who flew to the edge of space aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket last month, even offered to pay for $2 billion of the project if NASA would award his company a contract.
Jeff Bezos unveils the Blue Moon lunar lander, May 9, 2019.
Blue Origin
Still, NASA declined. The US Government Accountability Office upheld NASA’s decision and turned down the protests on Friday.
Shortly afterwards, Blue Origin published its new graphic. But it wasn’t the first time the company has put out infographics criticizing its competitors.
Blue Origin also published a snarky graphic about Virgin Galactic

Blue Origin pioneered this new method of promoting itself (and knocking competitors) last month.
A few weeks after Bezos revealed that he planned to fly to the edge of space, Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson announced that he’d be going aboard his own company’s space plane — with liftoff scheduled just nine days before Bezos. Shortly before Branson’s flight, Blue Origin posted a chart comparing the two flights on Twitter. The graphic points out that New Shepard has bigger windows and flies higher than Virgin Galactic’s space plane.
Still, even though Branson beat Bezos to the edge of space, the Amazon founder has a special rivalry with Elon Musk. The two have similar ambitions — to establish human settlements in space — but have sparred over their competing companies since 2013, when SpaceX tried to get exclusive use of a NASA launchpad and Blue Origin filed a protest. The companies have also battled over patents, and Bezos and Musk have made repeated jabs at one another on Twitter and in media interviews.
Now, SpaceX is becoming a NASA favorite. Its Crew Dragon spaceship is regularly ferrying astronauts to and from the International Space Station. Just three days after Bezos’s launch, the agency awarded SpaceX a $178 million contract to launch its mission to Jupiter’s ocean moon Europa.
Blue Origin, meanwhile, hasn’t yet launched a rocket to orbit. Its vehicles can skim the edge of space for a few minutes before falling back down, but they aren’t strong enough to push themselves to orbital heights.

SpaceX
Blue Origin — which Bezos has called his “most important work” — published more than the graphic. On the same webpage, Blue Origin also put up three single-page letters criticizing NASA’s decision and pleading with Congress to make the agency pick a second provider for its lunar lander.
The letters say that NASA’s process was “flawed,” “inconsistent,” “unfair,” and “ignored the significant risks” of choosing just one provider.

Demonstration against the establishment of a health pass, near Place de la République, in Paris, July 31, 2021. BENJAMIN GIRETTE FOR “THE WORLD”
Erik Neveu is professor emeritus of political science at the University of Rennes and co-author of New political sociology of France, with Thomas Frinault and Christian Le Bart (Armand Colin, 300 p., 29 euros). It decrypts for The world demonstrations against the health pass, while a fourth Saturday of mobilization must take place, this August 7.
How can we explain the strong mobilization of anti-health pass demonstrations in the middle of summer?
Article reserved for our subscribers Read also Florian Philippot tries to ride the anti-sanitary pass movement
For a part of the participants, by an exasperation in front of the multiplication of the constraints, of the inconsistencies also of the public policies for eighteen months, by the well-founded feeling that certain decisions parachuted without notice are inapplicable, whatever the judgment that the ‘we have on them. For others, by the feeling of being the direct victims of government choices, as is the case with restaurateurs or cultural actors. For another category of people, undoubtedly more structured politically, by anti-vaccine and anti-statist convictions.
Is there a precedent for summer social mobilization or is it unprecedented?
In 1953, there was a wave of PTT strikes in the South West which spread across the whole country. We can also think of the movement of support for undocumented migrants who occupied the Saint-Bernard church in Paris at the time of the Chirac-Juppé duo, in the mid-1990s. But another parameter should be introduced: the editorial staff’s need to find enough to fill the news in the middle of summer. Which probably inflated the cover.
Can we compare these demonstrations with those of the “yellow vests” movement?
The problem is that everyone, academics and journalists, are now going to replace “May 68” with “yellow vests” as the standard for mobilizations. We can note that there are figures of the “yellow vests” invested in the movement, that the vest appears there as a symbol, that they are also in part similar sociological profiles: level of education below the average, strong presence. independents, often popular circles.

As for the “yellow vests”, the movement against the sanitary pass seems interclassist. It brings together members of the far right but also of the left, as well as citizens without partisan affiliation. How to define it politically?
It seems to me that the procession organized by Florian Philippot and the Patriots was quite thin. As for the “yellow vests”, there is a logic of “double constraint”. On the one hand, the majority of demonstrators do not want to risk being “taken over” out of mistrust or aversion to the entire spectrum of the political offer. And unless we imagine that the movement swells and takes the eruptive forms of “yellow vests” at their peak, it condemns itself to impotence if it cannot be translated into proposals or political relays.

Martin Fuksa after third place in the semifinals at 1000 meters.
Yara Nardi, Reuters
“When you see what he gives and sacrifices and then the medal escapes, he regrets it. The fifth place is nice, but we went here for a medal, we really wanted to, “said Petr Fuksa Sr.. He suspects that it will take at least a few days for his son to come to terms with his unfulfilled medal desire.
“I believe that he is strong and will overcome it as soon as possible, we will support him in that,” assured the former successful canoeist. The most experienced member of the family team, Josef Fuksa, stood next to him and agreed.
I wanted to prove what Martin Doktor, Fuksa admitted with emotion. But he was not disappointed
“Now we’ll let Martin be for a while and it will go away on its own,” he is convinced. “It’s hard for him who has never done sports to do it.
It was a few minutes after the race, but they both knew what needed to be worked on to make “In the third of all good in 2024 in Paris.” Martin Fuksa lost in Tokyo after the start. “We’ll start working at the beginning. “he wouldn’t have the strength to finish, but they usually work out for him. We change the training a bit, we explain to him what is needed.
According to the coaching duo, convincing him should not be a problem. “Martin has always been stubborn, he goes after his own with his eyes closed, but in a good way. It is really good material, it works well. That’s why I would like the medal, “says Petr Fuksa Sr.
What will be next?
The family council will decide on further plans of the training group based in Nymburk. The season is not over yet, the World Cup is scheduled for Copenhagen in September, but plans will be made for a longer-term view of Olympic Paris.
The Fuks would like to go there again in full composition, including Martin’s younger brother Petr. “Deblkanoe helps Martin, he’s a good distraction,” says the father of both canoeists. In addition, 25-year-old Petr could be competitive at the top in three years. “He gets better year after year. “smiles Petr Fuksa senior.
Fuksa in action! Rio repeated in the final
“But the worst thing is that the Olympics are once every four years and time flies terribly. Martin didn’t get to London by one place, he was fifth in Rio, here too, he will be 31 in Paris. So I hope that the one upstairs will take pity on us and give us that, “he believes.

At a rally against rising gasoline prices in New Delhi on July 9, 2021. SONU MEHTA /HINDUSTAN TIMES /SHUTT/SIPA
The image produced its small effect. Ripun Bora, Congress Party (opposition) MP elected from Assam state in northeast India arrived in Parliament on a bicycle on July 29. An unusual practice in a country where the very hot and very humid climate generally dissuades users of two-wheelers. Mr. Bora wanted to denounce in front of the television cameras the unprecedented rise in fuel prices since the spring.

“The government does not allow us to discuss issues such as the sky-high price of gasoline. It only remains for us to demonstrate “, he said, the bust covered with a poster denouncing the great return of inflation. As soon as the regional elections passed in Assam, but also in West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, in early May, the liter at the pump, until then maintained at a stable level by the government of Narendra Modi, s’ is set to increase in worrying proportions, to the point of crossing the psychological bar of 100 rupees (1.14 euros).
The price of gasoline is 32.9% higher and diesel 31.5% higher than in August 2020
A price inaccessible to the vast majority of Indians, more than two-thirds of the population (68.8%) having to live on a daily basis on less than 2 dollars (1.70 euros), for a minimum wage set at 176 rupees per day . Since then, the situation has not improved, dissuading the most disadvantaged drivers from refueling. Friday, August 6, the liter of gasoline was sold at 101.9 rupees per liter in the capital, Delhi, and proved to be even more expensive in other large metropolises: 102.5 rupees in Chennai (ex-Madras), 105, 3 rupees in Bangalore and 107.9 rupees in Bombay, the commercial capital.
Oil demand has certainly increased on the world market, after a slowdown in 2020, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. But, as the daily highlights Indian Express, “It is the taxes of the central state and the federated states which are the main reason for the increase”. The price of gasoline is 32.9% higher and that of diesel 31.5% higher than in August 2020. In Delhi, taxes represent nearly 56% of the price at the pump of the gasoline and a little over 50% of the price of diesel.
“A very alarming situation”
While some states, such as Rajasthan, West Bengal or Assam, have banned themselves from increasing regional taxes in 2020, so as not to worsen the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus, the federal state headed by the government Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi raised excise duties on petrol to 13 rupees per liter and on diesel by around 16 rupees per liter, to limit the fall in revenues and the soaring public deficit.
