Riz Ahmed’s latest drama casts him in a complex lead role: a drummer for a punk metal group who begins to lose his hearing and sees his stage career at risk. His performance? He was filled with praise and the two-hour film, currently available on Amazon Prime Video, led to him being nominated for Best Actor at the next Golden Globes.

It was a risky film that was in the works for 13 years and that required several months for Ahmed to prepare himself in the percussion instrument and in the sign language that he dealt with.

Now that methodical effort seems to pay off. His name emerged in that nomination and in others more recently during film festivals of greater or lesser relevance to the audience. Critics from Atlanta and Kansas and the Gotham Awards have already been in charge of crowning him in his leading role and at the end of the road are the Oscars, where it seems to be a promising letter despite a competition that would possibly face him against giants like Gary Oldman. Anthony Hopkins or Tom Hanks.

A good moment for the 38-year-old actor who with this latest creation approached the deaf community and continued to write the ascending story of a career that is attached to the independent but has also ventured to try his luck in blockbuster films from major studios. cinema.

A long way has passed since his debut in 2006. In those first steps his roles went into British television movies and series. Perhaps the best known productions where he would participate were the documentary “Camino a Guantánamo” (2006), his first major role, and the miniseries “Dead set” (2008) by Charlie Brooker, creator of “Black mirror.”

From then on his UK holdings would diversify and he would even get nominations for the British Independent Film Awards thanks to feature films like “Shifty”, “Four lions” and “Ill Manors”. Works that for the most part were reflections on the Muslim identity and prejudices of a people, the same ones that he has defined as small, neglected and very intimate. But they also functioned as a kind of European harbinger of the success that awaited him in later years.

Of course, your progress toward that success came to a greater extent as you approached the United States. A new setting where he also ran into unpleasant situations: scripts that required offensive characters of Muslim stereotypes and previous auditions where he did not do well at all, as in the case of “Slumdog millionaire” by a renowned Danny Boyle.

In 2014 he played Rick in “Deadly Scoop”.

Until with “Deadly First” (2014) came a new opportunity. It was a modern thriller that starred Jake Gyllenhaal and where the young actor played the assistant of that dishonest criminal reporter in the eventful nights of Los Angeles.

This would further join the Hollywood industry. Although in that particular case, and despite the renowned actors, it was also an independent film, with Dan Gilroy directing.

“There is an assumption that, as an actor, Hollywood is always the end point, but I never thought in that sense,” he told The Guardian in October 2014, the release month of the film. Also in that instance he gave more indications: “If you are an artist of color, sometimes the United States presents more opportunities. I think cinema in the UK has to catch up ”.

Thus, he participated fully in more commercial and almost guaranteed box office films that did not require stereotypes from the Middle East. First, with a minor role in “Jason Bourne” (2016), also as part of the universe created by George Lucas in “Rogue one: a Star Wars story” (2016), and later as an antagonist in “Venom” (2018 ), Sony feature film based on the character from the Marvel comics. This is how he supplied his career with products that he was not completely used to.

During his time on North American television, he would obtain his first Emmy award in 2017. HBO’s “The night of”, where he played a Pakistani-American murder suspect, not only served to obtain an award, it was also the occasion to embrace the first nomination for the Golden Globes. That was the time where he was able to test the waters that will receive him again on February 28 under different conditions in all senses.

An adventure on the small screen where productions like “The OA” from Netflix and “Girls”, also from HBO, are also added.

Ahmed played Nasir Khan on HBO’s “The Night of.”

However, a key moment in Ahmed’s career came in 2018 with “The sisters brothers”. A comedy-tinged western starring Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly that put the actor in the shoes of a chemist who had to escape from the duo. From then on something changed.

“That was the turning point for me as an actor when I realized that I want to do something a little different. I want to make work work differently. I want to create from a different place, ”he admitted to Indie Wire this month, emphasizing the need to bring more of himself to the characters he played on screen.

“There was an opportunity to do bigger and more commercial projects, make money and buy a house and all that stuff. But I thought ‘this is your chance’. My instinct about it was strong. For some reason, I was really hungry for something like that, “Ahmed told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year and after the release of” Sound of metal, “which is set right after the 2018 western and” Venom, ” production that he intends not to return to in the sequel, arguing that all of that is already explored.

In his most recent film “Sound of metal”, he plays Ruben Stone a drummer who loses his hearing.

The latest news places Ahmed in new roles. Recently, and despite the pandemic, he finished the production of “Invasion”, a new science fiction thriller that will be added to his history of working with Amazon.

Added to that is “Exist west”, one of the six creations that the Obamas have in hand with Netflix. Fate puts the actor in the adaptation of the book “Welcome to the West” by Mohsin Hamid, which tells the story of two immigrants who leave their country of origin in search of new opportunities.

On the other hand, his incipient production company, Left handed films, signed a contract with Amazon Studios and is preparing the massive release of “Mogul Mowgli”, a feature film that Ahmed starred in and co-wrote and which he defines as a personal work. The story is, curiously, starring a British-Pakistani rapper who is affected by a serious illness on his first world tour. Ahmed has also developed that musical side with “Riz MC”, a career sheltered in rap, with studio albums and a significant number of singles.

“I consider that great actors are excellent detectives, since they constantly fight to find the truth of the circumstances of their characters,” clarified during that same interview who now has his eyes set not only on the projections of his production company or on the nominations and awards, but in the dream of a lifetime: the modern adaptation of “Hamlet” by William Shakespeare.

Naomi Watts has been a few hours in Barcelona to inaugurate the NMC Health’s Eugin Fertility and Assisted Reproduction Clinic. A total of 6,500 square meters in Balmes street, which the actress has traveled accompanied by Prasanth Manghat, CEO and Executive Director of NMC Health.

The British, although of Australian nationality, is a goodwill ambassador for UNAIDS (a United Nations program that coordinates the fight against AIDS), and yesterday he thanked that Manghat I chose her as an ambassador for this global project because “it is always nice to be useful to the community”. In this regard, Manghat said that Watts it was ideal “for this long journey, because it is a benchmark for many generations.”

Before the inauguration of the clinic , the actress of the impossible chatted with The vanguard: “Being a mother is what has had the greatest impact on my life. There are many women in my environment who are constantly struggling with failed motherhood issues and I believe that everyone should have right to motherhood and fatherhood”.

Watts, 51, is the mother of two children, Alexander Sasha, 12 years old, and Samuel Sammy, who will turn 11 next December 13, born from his relationship with the actor Liev Schreiber, from which he separated three years ago. “I would have liked to have had the children younger,” he says, but assures that his career was progressing very quickly. She thinks that motherhood has affected her career not from a creative point of view, but logistically, “I try not to shoot in very distant places, so as not to be away from my children for too long. Now I wouldn’t have been able to shoot The Impossible because I had to spend a lot of time in Thailand, and it’s a long way from home ”.

The actress has assured that she would love to work in Barcelona or in Spain “

The protagonist of titles like Mulholland Drive, King Kong, 21 grams, The Impossible or Eastern Promises , was the star at the opening of the Marrakech Film Festival, last weekend; and on Monday one of the most elegant at the British Fashion Awards. But yesterday, in Barcelona, Naomi Watts She showed off the simplicity that characterizes her in her day-to-day life, with jeans and a black blazer, a very natural makeup and her blonde bob-style hair.

She confesses that since she is a mother “you are more responsible, you think about how everything you say affects them, and you want to take care of them in all possible situations and set an example”. “I always try for my children to be kind human beings, with compassion and intelligence.” In the networks, both she and Schreiber receive criticism for letting the youngest of their children dress in feminine clothes.

On climate change, the actress said: “My children are seeing how badly we are treating the planet and they are interested in hearing voices like that of Greta Thunberg that for them she is like a heroine ”. Of all his films, he assures that Sasha and Sammy have only seen King Kong. We analyze in Cinemascomics the Blu-Ray of A promising young woman, the winner of the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

In Cinemascomics we have analyzed the domestic edition on Blu-Ray of A promising young woman, the brand new winner of the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated in three other categories, which is already on sale in stores on DVD and Blu-ray; in addition to being available for rent and digital sale. The Universal Pictures film (2020) is distributed in physical format by Arvi Licensing in our country.

Debut filmmaker Emerald Fennell’s first feature film garnered four nominations at the latest Hollywood Academy Awards, winning the statuette for Best Original Screenplay. But even if it is her debut in the director’s chair, Emeral Fennell has a lot of experience in the world, since many of the scripts for Killing Eve are signed by her, where she has also worked as an actress, being chosen to play Camilla Parker Bowles in the series The Crown. In this way, his debut in the direction is still surprising and challenging, conquering both the public and the critics, also having a presence in various competitions; due in large part to the powerful and magnetic performance of Carey Mulligan (Suffragettes).

The performer Carey Mulligan was nominated for Best Actress at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes, and won the statuette for Best Female Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards gala. Thanks to the immense talent in front of and behind the cameras, the film swept the awards season, garnering more than a hundred accolades and nominations, most notably the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Taking this thorny issue forward was in part thanks to the support of great Hollywood figures such as Margot Robbie (‘The Suicide Squad’), who serves as a producer, but who did not reserve any role or cameo in the film. The film knows how to mix thriller with black comedy, to offer us a groundbreaking perspective and a provocative look at female empowerment, social justice and the most archaic and outdated customs that should be modernized in our society.

Synopsis: We learn the story of Cassie (Mulligan), a young woman who everyone said had a promising future in medicine, until something abruptly derailed her future. Years after leaving the degree, nothing in his daily life is what it seems, where he hides a monotonous life behind his devilish and cunning plan of revenge, with a double life in which he is completely transformed at night. In this way, a chance meeting will allow Cassie the possibility of revenge and repair the mistakes of the past.

Carey Mulligan is the undisputed star in a feature film that also includes great performances by Bo Burnham (‘Eight Grade’), Alison Brie (‘GLOW’), Clancy Brown (‘Thor:
Ragnarok’), Jennifer Coolidge (‘American Pie’), Laverne Cox (‘Orange Is the New Black’), Connie Britton (‘Dirty John’), Alfred Molina (‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’), Molly Shannon (‘Scary Movie 5’), Adam Brody (‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’), Angela Zhou (‘Infierno Sobre Ruedas’) y Christopher Mintz-Plasse (‘The Disaster Artist’), entre otros.

A Promising Young Woman is written and directed by Emerald Fennell, featuring Margot Robbie, Josey McNamara, Tom Ackerley, Ben Browning, Ashley Fox and Emerald Fennell herself in the production section. While the executive producers are Carey Mulligan, Glen Basner, Alison Cohen and Milan Popelka.

The film lasts approximately 114 minutes and is rated as not recommended for children under 16 years of age, shown in its Blu-Ray version with various extras, which we have analyzed for Cinemascomics readers. The Blu-Ray review is completely spoiler-free, in case you haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet and want to know what extras it contains.

A promising vision:

Director, screenwriter and producer Emerald Fennell explains that she wanted to make a movie in which an ordinary woman takes revenge in the real world. And the key was that it wasn’t about firing a gun, but being more devious.

For the filmmaker, the most important thing about this film is that everything it shows is quite ordinary and borders on the illegal. In turn, they talk about the director’s vision, how she knows exactly what she is looking for in each sequence and how she dominates each situation, despite being her first film. Given this, Emerald Fennell herself confesses that having experience as an actress has helped her a lot and has learned to identify the most conducive environment in which people feel comfortable to play her role.

Double transformation:

The actress Carey Mulligan cannot imagine anyone else incarnated as Cassie other than her, because if that had happened she would have been nervous and furious. Regarding the choice of the actress, the director explains that she has an enormous talent and that it was always her first choice for the role. In this way, the rest of the cast talks about how cordial, friendly and talented the actress is.

Regarding the construction of the character, the director wanted Cassie to be attractive to others, knowing how to appear normal, charming and sensual when necessary. But for this transformation between the wardrobe that the protagonist wears during the day and at night, going from everyday dresses, with pastel shades and flowers, to changing for other more daring to attract men, the intervention of the designer of wardrobe, Nancy Steiner.

The equilibrium:

The director comments that the film is a very black comedy, but also a thriller, finding itself in the limbo between hideous and hilarious. The cast explains that the script was what attracted so many well-known faces, and great comedic actors, to this indie project. In addition, they assert that there is no excess character and that each dialogue helps the plot, the filmmaker being very surprised to have managed to reunite such an incredible cast.

Audio Comments:

In-depth commentary during the film’s playback by screenwriter and director Emerald Fennell.

Most of the characters in Agents of SHIELD they went through some pretty serious trauma. Daisy (Chloe Bennet) was haunted by death and destruction since she was a baby and she openly fought against it. Melinda (Ming-Na Wen) changed forever by a horrible mission. Fitz (Iain de Caestecker) suffered brain injuries, hallucinations and even death.

Then there were Mack (Henry Simmons), who lost her daughter, and Elena (Natalia Cordova-Buckley), who lost her arms. And that’s not to mention Jemma (Elizabeth Henstridge), who was abducted at least once a season and even spent a season as a technologically deaf space slave. However, the main characters had to experience the highs along with the lows, which was not the case for Kara (Maya Stojan).

Kara Lynn Palamas, aka Agent 33, first appears in episode 3 of the second season. As a SHIELD agent, she is first shown being tortured by Daniel Whitehall (Reed Diamond). How she was captured isn’t revealed until much later in the season, but it stands to reason that she was a victim of Hydra’s takeover. Her first scene is also the only time we see her express what is indisputably her own mind, and she says very clearly, “I will never work for Hydra.”

Unfortunately, the next time she appears, later in the episode, she has been successfully reprogrammed by Hydra and is serving as Whitehall’s new right-hand man. In the next episode, she dons a nano mask that makes her look like May, and is then disfigured by May herself in an epic fight. Whitehall still has her by his side as a kind of bodyguard, but the nano-mask has fused with her face, meaning she wears May’s face for several episodes.

When Whitehall dies, she is apparently rescued, but by Ward (Brett Dalton), possibly the main villain of the first three seasons of the series. He treats her kindly, promising to help her find her true identity and initially rejecting her romantic advances because he doesn’t want to take advantage of her. The scene in which she does it is especially dark because Kara, using her nano mask, has changed her face to resemble Daisy’s, knowing that Ward has feelings for the other woman. However, everything seems to be going well at first, with Ward helping her to get revenge on Bakshi (Simon Kassanides) and to get photographic evidence of his true face.

Revenge is satisfying and the fact that Kara is reunited with her identity is good, but Ward’s treatment of her is deeply insidious – he acts like he’s helping her regain her identity, but (in part through an eventual romantic connection ) is actually lighting it with gas. She takes his views contrary to SHIELD and the narrative that she is just a victim is undoubtedly believed. When she is finally found by SHIELD, Jemma is able to remove Hydra’s actual brainwashing, but Ward’s more psychological conditioning remains.

This culminates in Ward and Kara kidnapping Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) and torturing her because she, while undercover in Hydra, told Whitehall about the location of Kara. She didn’t know that Kara was there and might not even know that Kara was taken away until the brainwashing was complete, but Ward, being anti-SHIELD, sees this as an opportunity to give Kara “revenge.” while destroying the SHIELD agents. They do horrible things to Bobbi while Kara blindly embraces the rhetoric Ward gave her.

When other agents enter the warehouse where Bobbi is being held, Kara changes her nano mask to May’s face, and Ward shoots her and kills her by accident. At that point he has not really achieved justice or revenge; She has barely been shown acting like herself. There are hints about her life and relationships prior to her abduction (she and Bobbi have a conversation when she is in the midst of deprogramming that suggests they were somewhat of friends), but very little is revealed explicitly, and she never manages to get her life back.

Her role in the story is strikingly similar to that of Bucky (Sebastian Stan) in the MCU – a former hero who has been brainwashed into working for Hydra, but while he is loved and praised, she is almost forgotten. This could be because he was a minor character in one season of the show, while Bucky appears in the most popular movies, or it could also be because he is an Asian woman and not a white man.

Other characters, notably Bobbi and Jemma, show sympathy for Kara in canon, but after her death, she is mostly forgotten. When she is discussed later, it is in the context of being Ward’s dead girlfriend (although May rightly mocks him for accidentally killing her). Not only is it forgotten, it is misunderstood, adding to the sheer tragedy of its history.

Pedro Pascal has not stopped in recent years. His schedule includes his starring role in the hit series Star Wars and Disney +, The Mandalorian, and new projects with Nicolas Cage, HBO and director Judd Apatow.

With the latter, director of titles such as Slightly pregnant and The king of Staten Island, the 46-year-old Chilean actor was filming in London until a few weeks ago a new feature film for Netflix. Titled The bubble, the production is a comedy that satirizes the Hollywood stars who had to record movies during the pandemic, and in it he shares with Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) y Maria Bakalova (Borat subsequent moviefilm).

From working on that film in England, the actor went on to surprisingly travel to Chile. Pascal arrived in the country in the middle of this week, drawing the attention of followers and of the officials themselves who saw him upon his arrival at the international airport.

A visit that is the first he has completed in Santiago in more than a year: the last time was in the summer of 2020, when he enjoyed a vacation in Torres del Paine with his Chilean family, including his father and actress sister, Lux Pascal.

His arrival in the country fulfills the objective of reuniting with those close to him but has a labor aspect as a major goal: the actor was contacted by a wine company with international reach to star in a new advertising campaign. According to sources consulted by WorshipPascal, upon completing his quarantine, will shoot a commercial that will air in the coming months.

Although the exact date on which the filming will take place has not yet been fully defined, his visit had been talking for months and fits with a window that he had between projects: after finishing The bubble in London, production of the ambitious series is due to begin The last of us, HBO adaptation of the popular video game.

His audiovisual experience in the wine world will become the first project that the actor from Narcos record in Chile, although it is not the first attempt. According to sources consulted by this medium in January, at the beginning of 2019 it was sought to bring him to the country to lead the campaign for a men’s clothing store. The objective of this initiative was to offer him a story that was linked to his Chilean roots, where he was born in April 1975 and where he left in 1976 with his family, first to Denmark and then to the United States.

If that time his busy schedule prevented his participation from being sealed, last year the Covid did its thing. In the wake of his starring role as a villain in Wonder Woman 1984, the promotion of the film explored formulas to bring it to Chile in the middle of 2020 with the aim of leading a day of interviews with Latino and local media. However, the pandemic, and the subsequent delay in the release of the film (from June to December), led to this alternative being totally rejected.

By the way, when he had not yet reached the popularity he currently enjoys, Pascal was in Latin America for filming in Colombia (Narcos, Triple frontier) and in Argentina, where he recorded his first film, Sisters (2005), by director Julia Solomonoff. But he had never worked in his home country, where the biggest Chilean star in Hollywood is getting ready to debut in the next few days.

The fame What gives a social network like YouTube It has already surprised us many times. The numbers and the interaction they generate among their followers have taken the platform’s best-known creators to places that, a few years ago, they could not even imagine. Today we want to talk to you about, perhaps, the highest ladder that only a few have achieved: making the leap from the small to the big screen. These are the most important appearances of youtubers in movies.

Youtubers who have appeared in movies

As we mentioned, not everyone has managed to take this step. Something that, surely, has been a milestone in their careers and that many would not believe when their agents contacted them for the job.

Luckily, the film and entertainment industry has evolved a lot, realizing that iconic YouTube profiles were a very good way to reach out to internet audiences. In addition, of course, to take advantage of its growing popularity and image.

The first case we want to talk to you about is the appearance of the youtuber Liza Koshy on ¡Abucheo! A Madea Halloween. This film was not at all the success that its producers surely expected. Also, actor Tyler Perry was quite criticized as usual. However, the more than 17 million followers that Liza already has on YouTube were delighted to see her play the role of Aday Walker.

Another stellar appearance of a YouTube creator in a movie was that of the youtuber iJustine, which already has almost 7 million subscribers, in the film The wedding doorbell. It is a comedy published in 2015 in which this creator, mainly technological, accompanied actors such as Kaley Cuoco or Kevin Hart in the cast.

Although still 26 years old, he is super young, in X-Men Origins: Wolverine we could see the youtuber Troye sivan playing Wolverine in his childhood part. Currently, this content creator is very focused on his facet as a musician, a few years ago Troye created videos for his channel of all kinds such as challenges, confessions or vlogs. Currently this young man has reached the figure of 7.4 million followers on YouTube.

The youtuber Flula Borg made an appearance as one of the rival dancers in Pitch Perfect 2. Flula was already well known on his channel for his skills as a dancer, so it was quite easy for him to perform his role as one of the leaders of the opposing band in this film. Today this creator already has a total of 817 thousand followers and YouTube.

Rubius, Sony’s new “signing” for the Uncharted movie

The last appearance of a youtuber in the cinema that, at the moment, is on everyone’s lips is that of our beloved Rubius. Although, in case you did not know, it is not the first time that Rubén appears on the big screen.

And it is that this well-known youtuber worldwide already had a small cameo in the last installment of Men in Black IV. When M enters the hall of the headquarters he discovers that many famous people in the world are, in fact, aliens in disguise. Well, one of them was Rubius.

However, the latest appearance of this youtuber on the big screen seems to go much further. And it is that he will have a cameo with Tom Holland himself in the film of Uncharted.

As Rubius himself has already confirmed through his Twitter account, it was signed by Sony Pictures over a year ago to play a small role in this movie. A real honor for him as he commented in his own tweet.

Bond has been beaten. Not by Blofeld, or Goldfinger, or Rami Malek’s megalomaniacal Lyutsifer Safin, but by The Battle at Lake Changjin. The Chinese blockbuster, a war epic set during the Korean War, has bested not only No Time to Die in the global box office rankings, but everything Hollywood’s had to offer in 2021 so far. F9, Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Godzilla vs Kong are among the other films to trail in Changjin’s wake, as statistics revealed earlier this week. Most everyone outside of China seems to be in agreement, however: this film is bald nationalist propaganda, endorsed and shaped by the Chinese state.

The Telegraph described it as an “anti-US propaganda film”. The BBC wrote that it was “Chinese propaganda”, and The Independent has described it likewise. By all accounts, deeming it propaganda is entirely fair; criticisms have cited the film’s loaded historical inaccuracies and heavy-handed nationalist overtones, which paint the Chinese intervention in Korea in a heroic light. Indignation is perhaps an appropriate response when you see it has already taken in almost five billion yuan at the box office (roughly $769m, or £557m), as of last weekend, from an initial budget of 1.3bn yuan (£147m). It’s already China’s fourth-biggest film of all time, and looks set to claim third place imminently. It will likely surpass Hi, Mom!, the Chinese time-travel comedy from February that has topped the global box office for 2021. That a work of transparent indoctrination is getting called out for what it is can only be a good thing. If only we were so ready to spot propaganda when it’s a little closer to home.

Hollywood has had a long and storied history with propaganda, specifically surrounding its links to the military. It dates back as far as the silent era: Wings, the first-ever Best Picture winner at the Oscars, was produced with the assistance of the Pentagon.  During the Second World War, the US Department of Defence (DoD) established the Office of War Information, which dedicated an entire agency (the Bureau of Motion Pictures) to censoring or vetoing more than 1,650 scripts across a three-year period. After the dissolution of the bureau, the American war movie remained a platform for affirmational jingoism; when the Vietnam war came around, it was with the government’s backing that John Wayne produced the hit propaganda film The Green Berets.

The UK was not immune to the allure of the military-entertainment complex. The First World War saw the UK’s War Office Cinematograph Committee produce and sponsor a number of fiction and non-fiction works with a fervent ideological edge. Among these was Hearts of the World, a crudely partisan war story directed by Birth of a Nation filmmaker DW Griffith, designed to curry favour for the war among American viewers. During the Second World War, Powell and Pressburger were enlisted by the Ministry of Information to make a number of propaganda-laden films, including 49th Parallel, which again sought to sway neutral Americans, and won the Oscar for Best Original Story.

But it wasn’t just war movies that were used for agitprop. The 1954 British adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, for example, was covertly funded by the CIA, with the ending altered to encourage unrest among communist viewers abroad, and discourage communist sentiment at home. (For its part, the Soviet Union was always a world-leader in the art of cinematic propaganda, with state-commissioned films driving a number of formal and technical innovations the US wouldn’t replicate for decades.)

Nor was the trend limited to the early- and mid-20th century. Documents that surfaced via Freedom of Information requests prove that the US DoD exerted its influence on more than 800 films between 1911 and 2017, including major blockbusters, from Captain America to Iron Man to Transformers. Though Marvel’s hugely popular film franchise rarely presents the military as heroes,  it’s fair to say Iron Man’s depiction of them is flattering; research by Tom Secker revealed that the DoD’s changes included the removal of a scene in which Iron Man was shot down by the air force, and the excision of a line referring to military suicides. The CIA also set up an entertainment liaison office in 1996, and leaked memos revealed it was heavily involved in Al Pacino’s 2003 movie The Recruit, and the controversial Kathryn Bigelow thriller Zero Dark Thirty.

Every so often, the spin will be so egregious that it merits a mention. American Sniper, Clint Eastwood’s 2014 drama about real-life Iraq War vet Chris Kyle, was widely criticised for its historical inaccuracies and pro-military slant, eliding much of Kyle’s racism and brutality.  Still, that didn’t stop it bagging six Oscar nominations. Captain Marvel was one of the biggest films of 2019, and was a bare-faced piece of propaganda, made with the collaboration of the US air force. In stretches, it appeared like an unusually elaborate advertisement for air force recruitment, a fact that was not lost on some critics. The film grossed well over $1bn.

Now, the biases and misrepresentations of American Sniper and Zero Dark Thirty were picked up on and discussed by western critics at the time the films were released. However, these were seldom described in news stories as “propaganda films” – though they undoubtedly fit the definition. Perhaps the issue with The Battle at Lake Changjin is not that it indoctrinates its audience, but that it fails to clothe its insidious political message in the requisite amount of subtlety.

Even Bond is, on some level, simply propaganda – espousing a kind of quietly imperialist, Anglo-supremacist worldview that sees the British intelligence forces always save the day in the end. (Earlier 007 outings were reportedly among those titles to be worked on by the US DoD, including Goldfinger, Thunderball, GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies.)

Obviously, any attempt by a state to effectively brainwash its population should be met with nothing but resistance and condemnation. China is, for many reasons, incomparable with the UK, or the US, and criticisms of its human rights record should be taken with the utmost seriousness. However, as we saw with some of Donald Trump’s campaign speeches, positioning China as some kind of faraway bogeyman – a land of authoritarianism and unvarnished propaganda – only serves to deflect attention away from the west’s own failings, and disguises our own socio-political shortcomings.

Yes, propaganda can look like The Battle at Lake Changjin. It can look like a Leni Riefenstahl film, black-and-white reels of wide-eyed crowds braying for Adolf Hitler and Nazi speeches. But propaganda can also look like Brie Larson strapping herself into a fighter jet in Captain Marvel, or Bradley Cooper squinting through the sight of a rifle in American Sniper. Propaganda has many faces. Picking and choosing which to recognise can only end badly.

Paul Bettany had to keep a big Marvel secret for a while: the transformation of his character, J.A.R.V.I.S., into Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen its characters change and evolve, but one of the biggest changes has been that of J.A.R.V.I.S. into Vision – and Paul Bettany knew about it long before it happened. Since 2008, the MCU has been bringing characters from Marvel Comics to the big screen (heroes, villains, and allies), and it all began with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, which introduced Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark along with Favreau himself as Happy Hogan and Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts.

Iron Man also introduced a minor character that went on to have a much bigger role in the MCU: J.A.R.V.I.S., Tony Stark’s A.I. and personal assistant tasked with running business for Stark Industries and security for Tony’s house and Stark Tower. J.A.R.V.I.S. was voiced by Paul Bettany, and it became a character on its own, even if a minor one who was sometimes used to enhance the comedy of a scene. J.A.R.V.I.S. went through a major upgrade in Avengers: Age of Ultron, where it became corporeal and changed its identity to Vision, with Bettany also playing the role, and he had to keep the secret of this transformation for years.

Avengers: Age of Ultron was the second time the original Avengers teamed up and it wasn’t as exciting as their first adventure together, but the events of this particular movie have ultimately impacted the MCU years later. In it, Tony and Bruce Banner developed the A.I. peacemaking program “Ultron”, with the purpose of helping the team with their heroic tasks, but it all went wrong when Ultron decided that the real threat was humanity. Ultron destroyed J.A.R.V.I.S., but its remains were found by Tony, and after the Avengers stole Ultron’s synthetic vibranium body, he uploaded what was left of J.A.R.V.I.S. into it, and with the power of the Mind Stone, Vision was born. This transformation was a surprise to fans, but Bettany had known for a while that he was going to have a bigger presence in the MCU.

Paul Bettany as Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron

Among the many secrets and stories shared in the book The Story of Marvel Studios is that of Bettany learning about J.A.R.V.I.S’ fate years before Avengers: Age of Ultron happened. The book reveals that becoming Vision “was a secret that Bettany had to keep for two years before it was officially announced in 2014”, meaning that by the time the first Avengers movie came out, Bettany knew J.A.R.V.I.S. wasn’t going to be around for longer, but he would. Vision has grown as a character and has been given a bigger role in the MCU even after his death in Avengers: Infinity War. By the end of Age of Ultron, he was part of the New Avengers team along with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), War Machine (Don Cheadle), and Falcon (Anthony Mackie). Vision developed a romantic relationship with Wanda, but it didn’t have a happy ending as he was killed in Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos took the Mind Stone.

However, Vision was given a second chance in WandaVision, where he not only returned as a projection of Wanda’s mind but a new Vision – White Vision – was made with the remains of the original one, thus extending Bettany’s time in the MCU. Although the minds behind the MCU have a plan, this one is constantly changing depending on various factors, including the characters’ development and how well-received they are. Going from J.A.R.V.I.S. to Vision was a big change for Bettany and the MCU, but it has turned out for the better, and it’s to be seen what White Vision’s role will be.

But many others, with no disrespect to Mr Woodyatt, are next-level stardom.

That’s certainly the case for Sarah Horswood who had a chance meeting with one of Hollywood’s biggest names.
