It took finding the right solvent design to apply a 2D top layer of desired composition and thickness without destroying the 3D bottom one (or vice versa). Such a cell would turn more sunlight into electricity than either layer on its own, with better stability.

Chemical and biomolecular engineer Aditya Mohite and his lab at Rice’s George R. Brown School of Engineeringreported in Science their success at building thin 3D/2D solar cells that deliver a power conversion efficiency of 24.5%.

That’s as efficient as most commercially available solar cells, Mohite said.

“This is really good for flexible, bifacial cells where light comes in from both sides and also for back-contacted cells,” he said. “The 2D perovskites absorb blue and visible photons, and the 3D side absorbs near-infrared.”

Perovskites are crystals with cubelike lattices known to be efficient light harvesters, but the materials tend to be stressed by light, humidity and heat. Mohite and many others have worked for years to make perovskite solar cells practical.

The new advance, he said, largely removes the last major roadblock to commercial production.

“This is significant at multiple levels,” Mohite said. “One is that it’s fundamentally challenging to make a solution-processed bilayer when both layers are the same material. The problem is they both dissolve in the same solvents.

“When you put a 2D layer on top of a 3D layer, the solvent destroys the underlying layer,” he said. “But our new method resolves this.”

Mohite said 2D perovskite cells are stable, but less efficient at converting sunlight. 3D perovskites are more efficient but less stable. Combining them incorporates the best features of both.

“This leads to very high efficiencies because now, for the first time in the field, we are able to create layers with tremendous control,” he said. “It allows us to control the flow of charge and energy for not only solar cells but also optoelectronic devices and LEDs.”

The efficiency of test cells exposed to the lab equivalent of 100% sunlight for more than 2,000 hours “does not degrade by even 1%,” he said. Not counting a glass substrate, the cells were about 1 micron thick.

Solution processing is widely used in industry and incorporates a range of techniques — spin coating, dip coating, blade coating, slot die coating and others — to deposit material on a surface in a liquid. When the liquid evaporates, the pure coating remains.

The key is a balance between two properties of the solvent itself: its dielectric constant and Gutmann donor number. The dielectric constant is the ratio of the electric permeability of the material to its free space. That determines how well a solvent can dissolve an ionic compound. The donor number is a measure of the electron-donating capability of the solvent molecules.

“If you find the correlation between them, you’ll find there are about four solvents that allow you to dissolve perovskites and spin-coat them without destroying the 3D layer,” Mohite said.

He said their discovery should be compatible with roll-to-roll manufacturing that typically produces 30 meters of solar cell per minute.

“This breakthrough is leading, for the first time, to perovskite device heterostructures containing more than one active layer,” said co-author Jacky Even, a professor of physics at the National Institute of Science and Technology in Rennes, France. “The dream of engineering complex semiconductor architectures with perovskites is about to come true. Novel applications and the exploration of new physical phenomena will be the next steps.”

“This has implications not just for solar energy but also for green hydrogen, with cells that can produce energy and convert it to hydrogen,” Mohite said. “It could also enable non-grid solar for cars, drones, building-integrated photovoltaics or even agriculture.”

On the subject of noise cancellation, Huawei does a good job on the Huawei Freebuds Pro 2. Our cosmic home, the Milky Way, contains between 100 and 400 billion stars. Astronomers believe that the galaxy was born 13.6 billion years ago, emerging from a rotating cloud of gas composed of hydrogen and helium. Over billions of years, the gas then collected in a rotating disk where the stars, such as our sun, were formed.

In a new study published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, the research team presents their findings about the stars in the outer regions of the galactic disk.

“We can see that these stars wobble and move up and down at different speeds. When the dwarf galaxy Sagittarius passed the Milky Way, it created wave motions in our galaxy, a little bit like when a stone is dropped into a pond,” Paul McMillan, the astronomy researcher at Lund Observatory who led the study, explains.

By using data from the European space telescope Gaia, the research team was able to study a much larger area of the Milky Way’s disk than was previously possible. By measuring how strong the ripples are in different parts of the disc, the researchers have begun to piece together a complex puzzle, providing clues about Sagittarius’ history and orbit around our home galaxy.

“At the moment, Sagittarius is slowly being torn apart, but 1-2 billion years ago it was significantly larger, probably around 20 percent of the mass of the Milky Way’s disk,” says Paul McMillan.

The researchers were surprised by how much of the Milky Way they could study using the data from Gaia. To date the telescope, which has been in operation since 2013, has measured the movement across the sky of approximately two billion stars and the movement towards or away from us of 33 million.

“With this new discovery, we can study the Milky Way in the same way that geologists draw conclusions about the structure of the Earth from the seismic waves that travel through it. This type of “galactic seismology” will teach us a lot about our home galaxy and its evolution,” Paul McMillan concludes.

En el aspecto fotográfico, el nuevo Oppo Reno 8 destaca por su fotografía de retrato. Sus tres cámaras traseras nos permiten la toma de buenas fotografías en condiciones de luz adecuadas. Veamos en profundidad su apartado fotográfico.

La cámara principal del Oppo Reno 8 cuenta con un sensor de 50 MP de Sony, concretamente el sensor IMX766, aunque podrían haber apostado por el IMX800 que monta el Honor 70. Su cámara gran angular cuenta con un sensor de 112º y un macro para tomas cercadas con un ángulo FOV de 89º con 2 MP.

El zoom x2 nos permite acercar el doble nuestro objetivo, al ser un zoom óptico los resultados son buenos, pero necesitaremos buenas condiciones de luz:

Si cambiamos al sensor gran angular podemos obtener más elementos en la foto, sin embargo vemos una pequeña aberración en los márgenes, aunque es apenas perceptible. En buenas condiciones de luz obtenemos resultados aceptables tal y como podemos ver en la siguiente fotografía:

Si nos centramos en las fotografías macro, el Oppo Reno 8 no destaca en absoluto, su sensor macro de tan solo 2 MP nos permite hacer fotos a 4 cm de un objeto, pero los resultados no son muy buenos:

Pasemos a la fotografía nocturna, el nuevo Oppo Reno cuenta con un modo noche que nos permite obtener resultados aceptables en situaciones de poca luz. La fotografía nocturna en aún una de las tareas que todos los smartphones deben mejorar. El Oppo Reno 8 aclara las fotos en el modo noche y podremos hacer fotos aceptables:

Con el zoom x2 obtenemos resultados que no proporcionan mucho detalle, por lo que no recomendamos hacer estas fotos con este móvil:

Pasemos a la cámara selfie, el sensor de 32 MP del Oppo Reno 8 nos permite obtener resultados de buena calidad en las fotos selfie cuando tenemos unas condiciones de luz aceptables:

En el apartado de vídeo, el Oppo Reno cuenta con algunas funciones interesantes. Una de ellas está centrada para compartir vídeo en redes sociales, hablamos del modo de vídeo dual, este modo permite grabar con ambas cámaras a la vez y obtendremos resultados divertidos y diferentes.

Podremos grabar en calidad 720, 1080 y 4K y dependiendo de la resolución que elijamos a 30 FPS o a 60 FPS. Los resultados de los vídeos son de buena calidad y cuando activamos el estabilizador podemos crear vídeos muy estables.

Otra de las funciones que tiene es la posibilidad de elegir la apertura que queremos mientras grabamos, es decir, la cantidad de desenfoque de fondo que queremos aplicar en el vídeo. Esta opción está disponible en la propia cámara de vídeo.

Pantalla plana AMOLED a 90 Hz

La pantalla es una de las grandes diferencias que tiene con su hermano mayor, el Oppo Reno 8 Pro. En este caso, el Oppo Reno 8 cuenta con un panel Dynamic AMOLED de 6,43 pulgadas y una tasa de refresco de 90 Hz. Hubiéramos agradecido los 120 Hz, ya que muchos móviles en este segmento de precio cuentan con 120 Hz.

La pantalla del Oppo Reno 8 cuenta con una resolución FHD (2.400 x 1.080 píxeles). En cuanto a la gama de colores, tenemos disponibles un modo nítido con una cobertura del 97% NTSC y del 95% DCI-P3. En el modo suave solamente tendremos sRGB.

Como ya es costumbre, el Oppo Reno 8 cuenta con una pantalla totalmente plana, un aspecto que está presente cada vez más en los móviles. Aunque siempre tendremos algunas marcas que sigue con sus bordes curvos como Huawei u Honor.

El sensor de huellas bajo la pantalla funciona muy bien, es rápido y preciso, aunque creemos que está demasiado cerca del borde inferior. También tenemos disponible el reconocimiento facial que es realmente rápido y fiable. Aunque no cuenta con sensor de profundidad, por lo que solamente utilizará la cámara selfie para ello.

Apuesta por MediaTek como procesador

En el interior del Oppo Reno 8 tenemos al mando el procesador MediaTek Dimensity 1300. No entendemos muy bien por qué Oppo ha optado por un procesador MediaTek, ya que hay chips Snapdragon mejores con el mismo precio.

A pesar de esto, el Oppo Reno 8 funciona de manera fluida y gracias a los 90 Hz de la pantalla la sensación de velocidad entre elementos es mayor. Con el nuevo Oppo Reno 8 disponemos de conectividad 5G y WiFi 6 por lo que tendremos la mayor velocidad disponible en cualquier tipo de red.

Este es el hardware del Oppo Reno 8 en detalle:

  1. MediaTek Dimensity 1300 como procesador de 8 núcleos, 4 x ARM Cortex-A78 a 2,60 GHz y 4 x ARM Cortex-A55 a 2 GHz.

  4. 256 GB de almacenamiento interno.

Hemos pasado la prueba GeekBench Benchmark y en este popular test de rendimiento el Oppo Reno 8 obtiene un total de 2.532 puntos en multinúcleo y 518 en mononúcleo. Con respecto a los gráficos obtenemos un total de 4.874 puntos:

En cuanto al gaming, el nuevo Oppo Reno 8 nos permite jugar a cualquier juego de móvil, pero puede que en algunos tan exigentes como Fortnite, Apex Legends o Call of Duty Mobile, veamos algunas bajadas de FPS.

Oppo Reno 8 no es un móvil especializado jugar, así pues, si estás buscando un móvil para gaming, este no es para nada el recomendado. En tal caso podrías usar el reciente Poco F4 GT. Así pues, el Oppo Reno 8 nos permite jugar, pero no es su punto fuerte.

Batería con larga duración con carga rápida

El Oppo Reno 8 cuenta con una batería de 4.500 mAh, una cifra que podríamos pensar que es corta, ya que con este precio podemos encontrar muchos dispositivos con 5.000 mAh. El mejor punto en cuanto a la batería del Oppo Reno 8 es su carga rápida.

Tenemos disponible una carga rápida de 80 W SUPERVOOC que nos permite tener cargado el dispositivo tan solo 33 minutos. En la caja nos viene el cargador y un cable USB, lo que sí echamos en falta es una funda, ya que, actualmente, casi todas las marcas incluyen una.

El Oppo Reno 8 cuenta con Android 12 de serie, seguramente sea uno de los móviles Oppo que actualizarán a Android 13 dentro de unos meses. La capa de personalización del Oppo Reno 8 es Color OS 12.1. Esta capa se caracteriza por tener una sencillez extrema.

El gran problema de esta capa es que cuenta con mucho bloatware (aplicaciones preinstaladas). La gestión de las aplicaciones es muy eficaz, la fluidez del sistema es adecuada y tenemos disponibles muchas opciones de personalización del sistema.

Dentro de todas esas apps, el Oppo Reno 8 cuenta con todas las aplicaciones de Google preinstaladas, puede que muchas si nos sean realmente útiles, pero algunas seguramente no las usemos nunca.

En general, el Oppo Reno 8 es un dispositivo que podemos hacer de él nuestro móvil principal o ser una buena opción para quienes buscan un rendimiento aceptable en todos los campos y que no quieren exigencias.
