Last week, the research into the presence of plant protection products on fruit and vegetables by the Pesticide Action Network Europe (PAN Europe) received a lot of attention in the Flemish (and also Dutch) media. This international NGO has mapped out how often pesticides of the most harmful category are found.

The data would show that this category has been found more often on fruits and vegetables over the years. Although the European Union’s policy is to reduce pesticide use, the amount of contaminated samples has increased by 53 percent over a nine-year period, PAN notes. For kiwis this was a fivefold increase, for apples and pears it was a doubling. In 2019, the most recent year for which data is available, residues were found on 29 percent of fruit in the EU.

Belgium is not spared in the study either. In our country, even in a European context, most harmful plant protection products were found on fruit. In Belgium, 34 percent of the fruit is contaminated with pesticides of the most harmful category. For pears it would even be 87 percent. Ghent University professor Pieter Spanoghe has critical comments on the research, stating that Belgian fruit and vegetables meet all Belgian standards and are absolutely safe.

Belgian fruit and vegetables meet all Belgian standards and are absolutely safe

Felt: What is your primary objection?
Pieter Spanoghe: “PAN is a lobby group that operates worldwide and has a specific goal in mind, namely the elimination of chemical crop protection products. It is a good thing that there are various lobby groups for and against. copying the opposing group must be questioned Everyone would frown if a communication from the crop protection industry were literally copied in the newspaper We would all think that this cannot all be true Can we not today in the opposite direction look and ask ourselves the same thing. What this NGO communicates can’t be true, can it? There is also a revenue model behind an NGO.”

What can you say about PAN’s findings?
“As far as the figures are concerned, I cannot check them in a few days and I will not contradict them. What I can say is that the measurement methods have improved a lot in recent years and the better you can measure and the more expertise you have in have at home, the more components you find. In the PAN study, the “presence” of certain residues is discussed and not about their concentration. It is not because pesticides are found on fruit that there is therefore a risk This claim is rightly seen as scare tactics with the opposite effect on public health, because it could lead to people consuming fewer fruits and vegetables, which is many times worse for our public health.”

How is the use of plant protection products regulated?
“The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has determined for each substance how much residue may still be present on fruit and vegetables after correct use. These ‘maximum residue levels’ (MRL), which show whether the grower uses plant protection products according to the label, are so low, that they are still far below the standard of food safety. In an unpublished study that I conducted with colleagues for the Federal Food Safety Agency (FAVV) into the concentrations of plant protection products in our fruit and vegetables, it appears that fruit and vegetables that are market, be absolutely safe.”

In my opinion, the objective of an NGO like PAN would be better aimed at training those 90 percent of farmers to do things differently than to opt for polarization

Why are crop protection products used at all?

“Growers do not use crop protection products for pleasure. Our crops are threatened daily by diseases, pests and weeds. If farmers do nothing about this, they will no longer have crops at the time of harvest. We are not the only ones walking around the globe and like the crops that farmers grow. They also like to eat fungi, bacteria, viruses, insects and other organisms. We compete with them and look for solutions every day to win that competition. One of those solutions is indeed chemical crop protection products. “

Is that the best solution or do we have many alternatives?
“For one farmer the answer is yes, for another farmer the answer is no. We see that the number of farmers who say no is still around 90 percent. The objective of an NGO like PAN would, in my opinion, be better targeted to train those 90 percent of farmers to do things differently than to opt for polarization.”

What role do retail and consumers play?
“Retail applies strict quality criteria and does not tolerate apples with spots, for example. The external quality of the fruit determines people’s purchasing behaviour. Internal quality (presence of pesticides), ecological quality (agriculture follows agro-ecological principles) do not count in their decision. This also prevents farmers from avoiding certain crop protection products.”

This is played out through a brainwashing strategy in such a way that I see farmers, agricultural representatives and politicians who completely go along with it and also believe that they are doing it wrong

Such reporting leads to fear mongering. Do you have any further objections?

“There is daily communication that agriculture is doing wrong: that everything is bad when it comes to impact on people and the environment. This is played out in such a way through a brainwashing strategy that I see farmers, agricultural representatives and politicians who go along completely and also believe they are wrong.”

“Let’s look at the objective facts. Farmers are often pioneers in innovation. They pick up the latest technologies and apply them to their farms. For example, they pay attention to precision spraying technology, they tackle drift where crop protection products evaporate to neighbors, they are committed with the erosion problem and they use crop protection products that are regularly reviewed for their pressure on people and the environment. The harmful crop protection products are inexorably banned. Agriculture really does not stand still and, like any technological sector, is progressing enormously. Often we are told that we should take our children to the farm to teach them that the milk does not come from a tetra can I think today we should take our fellow man to the farm to show them that farming is not the way they do may have experienced in their youth The time is ahead with the farmer gone.”

In communication about agriculture, a brainwashing strategy is played in such a way that farmers, agricultural representatives and politicians fully agree

Finally, critics also point to a cocktail of crop protection products. Even if the residue of the individual substances were below the standard, the combination could still have adverse health effects. What is your response to that?

“The combination effect is limited. On the one hand, this is due to the extremely low concentrations or amounts that we ingest through our diet, whereby science is no longer able to determine whether there is an adverse effect for humans. On the other hand, this – and this is a fallacy in this cocktail thing – because our bodies are very different inside. One drug acts on our red blood cells, the other acts on the stimulus transmission in our nervous system and the third acts on the liver. They don’t all work at the same time and to the same extent on the same target organ in humans. Many substances leave the body as quickly as they enter through the urine. The fat-soluble substances that are accumulated in the body for a long time are all no longer recognized for use in Europe As a result, the image of a cocktail where all the resources are together in the body is not really correct.”

“In the context of this discussion, we can also ask ourselves the impact of chemicals that do not come from crop protection or agriculture. Think of cosmetics, tattoos, cleaning and paint products, shampoos, exhaust gases and not least medicines. “These also put a strain on our body and also contribute to the so-called cocktail story. Fortunately, our body is a very strong machine. If chemicals and damage are caused to cells and organs, the body can repair it very efficiently.”

The director handed me the book ‘Prithviraj Raso’. July. I can see through the window that the rain has increased. Smith smiled and said, “When working with a historical character, his sense of responsibility is completely different from the characters in other films. The man has to know, to understand.” My journey started with Ajmerpati Chauhan Emperor Prithviraj. The book was written in Pingal by Chanda Bardai, a childhood friend and chief adviser of Prithviraj Chauhan. Whose birth and death coincidentally happened on the same day with Prithviraj. I then had the Hindi translation of the book.

Gradually an unforgettable stage in the context of history began to emerge. We see each character come alive before our very eyes. The best achievement of the director is the series ‘Chanakya’ which was ready for the national television in the eighties. The weaving of her story, the character analysis, the tiny details of history inspired us every moment. I would like to thank Subrata and Amitada for all this.

The day Subrata called and asked Yashraj Films to come to the office for the first time, I simply asked, ‘Tell me a little about my work?’ After thinking for a while, he replied, “You will make the world of Prithviraj, the world will see that work.” After all this time, our efforts are finally on the way to release tomorrow. Many stories, many memories are involved with this film. I may get more photo opportunities in the coming days, but ‘Emperor Prithviraj’ gave me a chance to get to know myself. ”

Samsung Mostra Blues & Rock

Music can be consumed in many ways. A “play” separates the audience from the infinite possibilities of sounds and artists, but there is a universe, in which stories, learning and images have an important and enriching cultural and social role. With that in mind, the Samsung Mostra Blues & Rock proposes to present this other side with a program free in the city of Sao Paulo – focusing on exploring the blues and rock musical style and its unfolding. The show started on June 1st (Wednesday), is composed of 24 activities, with exhibitions, masterclasses related to the history and initiation to music (through demonstrations with instruments), masterclasses with the theme of photography in music, in addition to pocket shows. All this programming will be distributed in two spaces: the CEU Yesin the North Zone, and the CEU Carrão, in the East Zone. The locations were chosen with the aim of democratizing access to culture for the general public and NGOs in the extremes of São Paulo.

From visionary filmmakers James Cameron (Avatar) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City), comes Alita: Battle Angelan epic adventure of hope and empowerment. When Alita (Rosa Salazar) awakens with no memory of who she is in a future world she does not recognize, she is taken in by Ido (Christoph Waltz), a compassionate doctor who realizes that somewhere in this abandoned cyborg shell is the heart and soul of a young woman with an extraordinary past. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious history while her street-smart new friend Hugo (Keean Johnson) offers instead to help trigger her memories. But it is only when the deadly and corrupt forces that run the city come after Alita that she discovers a clue to her past – she has unique fighting abilities that those in power will stop at nothing to control. If she can stay out of their grasp, she could be the key to saving her friends, her family and the world she’s grown to love.

When Alita re-awakens to a brand-new life in Iron City, she goes through a series of intense transformations.  She begins as a nearly blank slate, devoid of memories so that even the sour tang of an orange peel electrifies her taste receptors.  With no clear identity, she wonders if she is just an “insignificant girl” who has no real purpose, no real family, even as she begins to forge fledgling bonds.  Then, when she discovers the body that was intended to be hers— the so-called Berserker body that has faculties the likes of which Iron City has never seen, Alita has to contend with a whole different idea of her destiny.  Ultimately, Alita realizes she is definitely not going to be an insignificant girl, and she refuses to be just a weapon of destruction. Instead, she turns herself into a passion-fueled instrument for justice.

A massive search ensued to find someone who could embody all this—a diminutive person with a mammoth persona, with both high-flying moves and the sheer force of a bright and openhearted spirit.  There were no particular criteria as Alita could be any ethnicity. Iron City is not so much a nation as a last outpost of humanity, and Alita herself was born in a human colony on Mars.  What mattered most was believability.  After all, tiny Alita must stand up to 13-foot tall cyborg brutes, so the audience had to trust not only in her battle virtuosity but in her growing confidence and determination to both understand the vastness of her power and use it wisely.

After endless casting calls, the film’s Alita revealed herself in Rosa Salazar, the Canadian-born Cuban-American who has been seen in the Insurgent and Maze Runner series and in the thriller Bird Box.  Here, she would have to carry an entire movie on her shoulders, but everyone intuited she would rise to the challenge.

Salazar says that she felt inspired by an under-the-skin kinship with Alita. “I related to this girl who struggles with not knowing her own power, with not having a voice in this crazy world where everyone’s trying to grab what’s theirs.  I related to the dichotomy of rags and riches in Iron City, and to Alita’s journey of self-discovery.  I related especially to her trying to figure out her desires and what matters to her. And I related to her fierceness. She’s the sum of everything she’s been through to survive.”

The sheer newness of Alita’s experience of the world was especially thrilling to Salazar—a chance to imagine every taste, touch, and sight as your first, to drink in the wonders of friendship, family and romantic love with no expectations. “Everyone else in Iron City has been hardened and numbed.  But Alita is excited to try everything,” Salazar describes.  “She views Iron City as an amusement park at first. The streets are so alive, and she’s just having fun trying new things.”

She also runs headlong into a first romance, when she meets the charismatic, street-smart Hugo, who teaches her Motorball, the rocket-fueled sport that mesmerizes all in Iron City and so much more.  Audition after audition left the filmmakers unconvinced until total newcomer Keean Johnson came in and nailed the essence of the character.

“For the first time, she comes to know that rush of adrenaline but also the vulnerability of falling in love,” says Salazar. “Alita is fearless diving into things but then she also gets easily hurt because she has such a big heart.”

The Koalition interviewed Salazar and Johnson about their roles in Alita: Battle Angeldiscussing the numerous challenges they faced bringing the manga to life and more.

Kourtney amped it up a bit, wearing a sheer black shirt with a deep V-neck and baggy black pants.

Fans were shocked at how much Kourtney’s son has grown lately, noting that he was just as tall, if not taller, than his mom.

Their lunch trip marks the first time they’ve been seen publicly together since the Keeping Up With the Kardashians alumna’s wedding.

The whole family traveled to Italy to celebrate Kourtney and Travis Barker’s wedding.

Rumors have been swirling that the always-private teen is secretly revealing details about his family on social media.

MASON’S TEA

In April, fans spotted an Instagram account that some believe is run by Kourtney’s son Mason, though there’s no proof of that.

Although there is no proof, the page claimed to know Kylie’s new baby name.

Previously called “Wolf,” Kylie previously revealed on Instagram that she and Travis Scott had decided to change their nickname to something unknown.

“Gentleman Jacques Webster,” the unverified page alleged, doubling down on those wild claims again and adding a new one.

Since then, the previous alleged account “Angel J” has been linked to a new account “ItzAngel_.j” that has 10K followers.

The page shared an Instagram story on Monday, May 30, captioned about a burrito bowl on a marble counter:

“I don’t know how many times I have to keep saying this, but I keep getting asked, Kylie’s baby name is Knight Jaques Webster.”

Then came another Instagram Story, which read, “IDK who cares Kendall is engaged so I’m happy for her!”

This wouldn’t be the first time Mason has come out and shared shocking family details.

SOCIAL OVERPARTITION

He caused a stir in 2020 before his mother deleted his social media pages several times after posting front-facing Instagram and TikTok videos.

Mason told a fan during a video that appears on the screen: “No, Kylie [Jenner] and Travis [Scott] they haven’t gotten back together,” according to Buzzfeed.

In another leaked video that was pulled, a fan asked “What happened to your TikTok?”

“It was removed because I was ‘too young’ because I went too viral. I would have had 2.7 million [followers] at this point,” replied the rarely seen young man.

This new alleged Instagram page does not feature photos of him; the last page of it, which alleged that Kylie’s new name for hers newborn was Knight Jaques (the latter being Travis Scott’s middle name), had multiple posts of what appeared to be just a California landscape .

Kourtney shares Mason, as well as their six-year-old son Reign and nine-year-old daughter Penelope with ex Scott Disick.

I think it’s pretty clear at this point that North American copyright laws are kind of a mess. For example, did you know that if Disney hadn’t lobbied for an extension to the original 56 year limit on owning intellectual property, characters like Spider-Man would already be in the public domain? Think of all the Cronenberg-esque body-horror superhero flicks that we were denied by keeping the wall-crawler under Mickey’s family-friendly clutches!

Even so, the horror genre is still blessed with a boatload of public domain frights, many of which are ripe for revisiting in the year of our lord 2022. That’s why we’ve come up with this list of six of the best public domain horror movies that you can watch for free right now, as you shouldn’t have to break the bank in order to enjoy some good old-fashioned scares.

While nearly every film released before 1926 is now considered to be in the public domain in the United States, this list will focus on slightly more recent releases that became free due to production mishaps and legal loopholes. That being said, keep in mind that those older movies are also available for your entertainment free of charge, so I’d recommend checking out classics like Nosferatu and They have if you have the time.

As usual, don’t forget to comment below with your own public domain favorites if you think we missed an important one, as there plenty of free classics to choose from.

Now, onto the list…

6. Silent Night, Bloody Night (1972)

A bizarre proto-slasher starring Patrick O’Neal and Mary Woronov, Theodore Gershuny’s Silent Night, Bloody Night isn’t exactly a hidden gem, but there’s an undeniable charm to the film’s low-budget thrills. Telling the story of a man who inherits a mansion that was once an insane asylum and then has to deal with a murder-filled Christmas Eve, the flick is the very definition of a Midnight B-Movie that’s sure to entertain those looking for a schlocky good time.

Silent Night, Bloody Night is also notable for preceding Bob Clark’s seminal Black Christmaswhich also featured a deranged killer calling his victims to taunt them before enacting his murderous fantasies during the Holiday season.

You can watch the full film right here.

5. Little Shop of Horrors (1960)

public domain horror little shop of horrors

A comedic Roger Corman production featuring killer plants and a memorable appearance by a young Jack Nicholson? Sign me the hell up! While I’m still partial to Frank Oz’s 1986 musical adaptation of the story, there’s no denying the cheesy thrills of this monochromatic classic that no one thought was going to be a hit.

Even Corman didn’t think that this weird little production had a future, so he never bothered to copyright Little Shop of Horrorswhich is why it’s now in the public domain. This was clearly a mistake on the director/producer’s part, as the film went on to become a cult classic during its many TV showings and theatrical rereleases. In fact, Jack Nicholson describes the original screening of the picture as a pleasant surprise, as he’d never experienced such a positive reaction to one of his films before.

You can watch the full film right here.

4. Plan 9 From Outer Space (1959)

plan 9

Often referred to as “the worst movie ever made”, Ed Wood’s Plan 9 From Outer Space is actually a charming little exercise in cinematic earnestness. An odd sci-fi/horror mashup following extraterrestrials who raise the earth’s dead in an attempt to stop the development of a doomsday device, the film features the legendary Bela Lugosi as well as Maila Nurmi’s “Vampira” and more plywood UFOs than you can shake a stick at.

A single look at the flick’s campy performances and makeshift production value should be enough to convince you of Ed Wood’s legacy as a B-movie legend, working around absurd limitations to deliver a completed film that’s way more fun than it has any right to be.

You can watch the full film right here.

3. Carnival of Souls (1962)

public domain horror carnival of souls

If there’s a cinematic equivalent to a one-hit wonder, that honor would certainly go to the legendary Herk Harvey. A Colorado native, Harvey only directed a single feature film in his lifetime, which is 1962’s highly underrated Carnival of Souls. Telling the story of a young woman who becomes obsessed with a mysterious abandoned Carnival after surviving a car accident, the film remains a highly atmospheric thriller that culminates in a Shyamalan-like twist ending.

If the foreboding atmosphere and eerie cinematography aren’t enough to convince you that this slow-burning thriller is worth a watch, the film is also notable for influencing genre legends like David Lynch and George A. Romero. Both directors have gone on record explaining that Harvey’s eye for haunting imagery inspired several moments in their celebrated filmographies.

You can watch the full film right here.

2. The Last Man on Earth (1964)

public domain horror last man on earth

Directed by Ubaldo Ragona and Sidney Salkow, this Italian-American co-production isn’t exactly the most popular adaptation of Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend (after all, it doesn’t feature Will Smith vibing to Bob Marley in post-apocalyptic New York), but it’s certainly one of the most entertaining Vincent Price vehicles out there.

Following the tragic story of the lone survivor of a vampiric outbreak, the film is a surprisingly thrilling apocalyptic yarn that almost certainly influenced Romero’s Dead trilogy. While it wasn’t exactly a success during its initial release, The Last Man on Earth found a second life once it entered the public domain, benefiting from several rereleases that turned it into a cult classic.

You can watch the full film right here.

1. Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Best Horror Movies

Arguably one of the most influential horror films of all time, George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead needs no introduction, presenting the world with modern zombies and kick-starting the career one of the genre’s greatest directors. However, this apocalyptic masterpiece actually fell into the public domain due to a copyrighting error when the film was retitled from Night of the Flesh Eaters.

While this minor blunder ultimately cost Romero and his crew thousands upon thousands of dollars in residuals, it also transformed this indie production into a public domain staple. Night of the Living Dead has shown up in the background of countless Hollywood productions, as well as copious amounts of Halloween-themed TV marathons. In fact, it could be argued that the film’s public status is just as responsible for its resounding success as its cannibalistic scares.

So if you’re only going to watch one movie on this list of public domain horror classics, it should definitely be this one, and you can find it right here.

Bidirectional association between inflammatory bowel disease and depression among patients and their unaffected siblings. Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 2022; DOI: 10.1111/jgh.15855

A new study from Keck Medicine of USC shows that patients diagnosed with IBD were nine times as likely to develop depression than the general population. In addition, their siblings who did not suffer from IBD were almost two times as likely to develop depression.

Conversely, patients with depression were two times as likely to develop IBD, and their siblings without depression were more than one and a half times as likely to develop IBD.

“This research reveals a clinical overlap between both conditions, and is the first study to investigate the two-way association between IBD and depression in siblings,” said Bing Zhang, MD, a gastroenterologist with Keck Medicine and co-lead author of the study.

Zhang and his fellow researchers analyzed the data of more than 20 million people from Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, which contains comprehensive medical information on more than 99% of Taiwanese residents.

For 11 years, they tracked patients with either IBD or depression and their siblings without either condition, comparing onset of depression or IBD with a control group of people without either condition, but with similar age, sex and socioeconomic status.

Zhang hypothesizes that many factors may contribute to the bidirectional nature of the disorders, including environmental stressors, the gut microbiome (consisting of bacteria, fungi and viruses) and genetics.

“The finding that people with IBD are more prone to depression makes sense because IBD causes constant gastrointestinal symptoms that can be very disruptive to a patient’s life,” he said. “And the elevated depression risk among siblings of IBD patients may reflect caregiver fatigue if the siblings have a role in caring for the patient.”

What surprised researchers was that patients with depression were prone to IBD. Zhang speculates that this discovery may have to do with what is known as the gut-brain axis, a scientifically established connection between the gastrointestinal system and the central nervous system, which consists of the spinal cord and the brain.

For example, he said, inflammation of the brain, which plays a role in depression, may be linked to the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, a hallmark of IBD.

The researchers are not sure why siblings of patients with depression are more likely to be diagnosed with IBD. Zhang surmises that there may be a shared genetic susceptibility for either disease that presents differently in family members.

Zhang hopes that the study findings will encourage health care professionals to take both family history and the relationship between gastrointestinal and mood disorders into consideration when evaluating or treating patients with either IBD or depression.

Through more research and better understanding of the gut-brain axis, he envisions leveraging the newfound connection between the conditions to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of IBD and mental disorders.

The study was supported by grants from the Taipei Veterans General Hospital and the Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan.

Newcomers Tara and Sam Carpenter and Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin just might be some of the bravest characters in the Scream franchise, so it’s great news that these characters will be back for Scream 6 in 2023. Original characters like Sidney Prescott, Dewey Riley, and Gale Weathers show off their courage in every film that they’re in, including in 2011’s Scream 4 when Sidney comes back home to promote a memoir.

While fans love Sidney’s bravery every time she fights Ghostface, there are some other characters who don’t showcase quite as much courage in Scream 4. From Sidney’s cousin Jill Roberts to reliable and lovable Dewey, some characters show more fearlessness than others.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

9 Robbie Mercer

Robbie Mercer looking serious in Scream 4

While Charlie Walker’s friend Robbie Mercer has found his passion in life, his enjoyment of horror movies and desire to run his school’s cinema club doesn’t make him very brave. Robbie might throw the annual Stab-a-thon as he likes rewatching his favorite slasher franchise, but when the real threat of Ghostface appears, Robbie is terrified.

RELATED: Every Main Scream 4 Character, Ranked By Likability

Robbie’s death is one of the most sad and heartfelt moments in Scream 4and when Ghostface comes for him, he’s clearly and understandably scared to be staring death in the face.

8 Trevor Sheldon

Trevor Sheldon looking serious in Scream 4

Trevor Sheldon is a character appearing in one Scream movie, and while he has a lot of confidence when approaching his relationship with Jill, which is in shambles after he cheated, he doesn’t bring a lot of bravery to the situation at hand.

When Jill kills Trevor, it becomes clear that she wanted to frame him for all of the deaths, and he was wrong to trust her and even want to date her in the first place. While some others in the friend group stand up to Ghostface, Trevor is scared.

7 Judy Hicks

Although Judy Hicks is Deputy Sheriff in this film and needs to find courage when keeping Woodsboro safe from Ghostface, it’s clear that Judy is a bit scared in some scenes.

RELATED: 10 Best Scream (2022) Characters, Ranked

Judy does her best to stay strong, taking Ghostface costumes down from the town square and helping Dewey with the investigation. But when compared to some of the other characters, such as her boss Dewey, Judy doesn’t seem as bold.

6 Dewey Riley

Dewey is not only one of the best returning characters in Scream (2022) but often acts as if he’s totally fearless. Dewey is as brave as he is kind, and while it could be argued that he’s the bravest in the fifth movie because he confronts Ghostface at the hospital, Dewey does what he can to protect people in Scream 4.

Dewey believes strongly that his job is to help others and he’s a fan favorite because of his loyalty and clear thinking. Dewey makes tough decisions and is even brave enough to tell Judy that he can tell that she’s flirting with him when she makes lemon squares.

5 Gale Weathers

Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers in Scream 4

Gale has a sense of daring adventure since she’s a reporter, and she puts herself into harm’s way on a regular basis, wanting to be part of the story.

When Gale wants to go to the Stab-a-thon, she can tell that something big and significant will take place here, and she approaches the entire situation with more courage than most people would have. Gale could die anytime and seems aware of that fact but it never stops her.

4 Kirby Reed

Kirby Reed sitting in a classroom in Scream 4

Kirby Reed is one of the wisest Scream 4 characters and also one of the bravest. From the minute she learns that there is another Ghostface, she springs into action, trying to keep her friends Jill and Olivia Morris safe.

Even when talking to Ghostface, Kirby doesn’t let up for a minute and never lets someone else be in charge or tell her what to do. It would make sense if Kirby was scared, since she’s in danger of being murdered like her friends and peers, but Kirby remains tough.

3 Sidney Prescott

Sidney might be the bravest of all in Scream 4 since she comes home to Woodsboro and doesn’t leave even when learning that there’s another Ghostface. While others would say “no thanks” and run far away, Sidney takes on this situation with the classic strength that fans love.

Sidney always knows the right thing to do when fighting Ghostface, and while she would of course love to be anything other than a final girl, she sighs and goes ahead and does what she feels is right in every situation.

2 Charlie Walker

Charlie Walker smiling in Scream 4

Charlie isn’t a very scary Ghostface killer in Screambut he does seem to have a lot of boldness. Charlie is pretty daring when he agrees to go along with Jill’s plan, knowing full well that he could get caught and seriously punished.

Charlie is also brave to hide in plain sight, as he flirts with Kirby, hangs out with Robbie, and continues to run the film club and live his life as if he wasn’t one of the killers behind the terrible murders.

1 Jill Roberts

Jill shows an overwhelming amount of courage when she puts a horrific plan in motion and decides to be the next Ghostface. She drags Charlie into the mix and wants to get caught because she has dreams of going viral and being known for orchestrating these murders.

Jill never seems scared of being found out for one moment, even though it could mean prison or death, and she goes through the motions of her scheme while pretending to be as terrified as everyone else is.

Long-term Outcomes of Adding Lutein/Zeaxanthin and ω-3 Fatty Acids to the AREDS Supplements on Age-Related Macular Degeneration Progression. JAMA Ophthalmology, 2022; DOI: 10.1001/jamaophthalmol.2022.1640

“Because beta-carotene increased the risk of lung cancer for current smokers in two NIH-supported studies, our goal with AREDS2 was to create an equally effective supplement formula that could be used by anyone, whether or not they smoke,” said Emily Chew, M.D., director of the Division of Epidemiology and Clinical Application at the National Eye Institute (NEI), and lead author of the study report. “This 10-year data confirms that not only is the new formula safer, it’s actually better at slowing AMD progression.”

AMD is a degenerative disease of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Progressive death of retinal cells in the macula, the part of the retina that provides clear central vision, eventually leads to blindness. Treatment can slow or reverse vision loss; however, no cure for AMD exists.

The original AREDS study, launched in 1996, showed that a dietary supplement formulation (500 mg vitamin C, 400 international units vitamin E, 2 mg copper, 80 mg zinc, and 15 mg beta-carotene) could significantly slow the progression of AMD from moderate to late disease. However, two concurrent studies also revealed that people who smoked and took beta-carotene had a significantly higher risk of lung cancer than expected.

In AREDS2, begun in 2006, Chew and colleagues compared the beta-carotene formulation to one with 10 mg lutein and 2 mg zeaxanthin instead. Like beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants with activity in the retina. The beta-carotene-containing formation was only given to participants who had never smoked or who had quit smoking.

At the end of the five-year AREDS2 study period, the researchers concluded that lutein and zeaxanthin did not increase risk for lung cancer, and that the new formation could reduce the risk of AMD progression by about 26%. After the completion of the five-year study period, the study participants were all offered the final AREDS2 formation that included lutein and zeaxanthin instead of beta-carotene.

In this new report, the researchers followed up with 3,883 of the original 4,203 AREDS2 participants an additional five years from the end of the AREDS2 study in 2011, collecting information on whether their AMD had progressed to late disease, and whether they had been diagnosed with lung cancer. Even though all the participants had switched to the formula containing lutein and zeaxanthin after the end of the study period, the follow up study continued to show that beta-carotene increased risk of lung cancer for people who had ever smoked by nearly double. There was no increased risk for lung cancer in those receiving lutein/zeaxanthin. In addition, after 10 years, the group originally assigned to receive lutein/zeaxanthin had an additional 20% reduced risk of progression to late AMD compared to those originally assigned to receive beta-carotene.

“These results confirmed that switching our formula from beta-carotene to lutein and zeaxanthin was the right choice,” said Chew.

The study was funded by the NEI Intramural program (EY000546) and through contracts (AREDS2 contract HHS-N-260-2005-00007-C; ADB contract NO1-EY-5-0007; AREDS Contract NOI-EY-0-2127, and contract HHS-N-263-2013-00005-C). The AREDS2 contracts were supported by the NIH Office of Dietary Office of Dietary Supplements, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the National Institute on Aging, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The study took place at the NIH Clinical Center.
