“Not only did I have the opportunity to meet her, but she told me to create a routine for her, and I: ‘Obviously, invite me and I’ll be there whenever you want, take me to your house in Los Angeles,’” Bárbara said with laughs. The Mexican influencer said it would be a thrilling experience training Salma in her home, whether in L.A, London, or Paris.

Oscar-winning icon Tom Hanks warmed hearts as he appeared on BBC’s The One Show sofa to chat about his new film. The American film legend was joined by Austin Butler his co-star in the new Baz Luhrmann film Elvis.

Ahead of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations the Forrest Gump. Philadelphia, Cast Away and Saving Private Ryan star regaled hosts Emma Willis and Jermaine Jenas with his charming story about the time he had dinner seated next to Her Majesty the Queen and discovered her drink of choice.

He told Emma and Jermaine that they had a ‘nice chit chat’ with subjects including how often she really has time off. But then the 65-year-old actor was thrown by a white-gloved hand placing a clear drink between himself and the Queen.

“I saw a white-gloved hand just put between me and her royal majesty a glass of water. But it wasn’t in a water glass. It was a clear liquid,” he recalled.

And he continued: “So I dared to ask the Queen ‘what is your majesty’s cocktail of choice?’ and she said ‘oh martini.’ She’s had a wonderful reign so maybe if I want to polish up my game I’ll start drinking martinis.”

The film icon chatted on the famous sofa

As he chatted worried fans commented that the Splash and Big star appears to have lost weight. @McCallum_121 tweeted: “Watching the @BBCTheOneShow thinking @tomhanks had lost lots of weight. #TomHanks #TheOneShow.”

@cb_038 observed: “Hanks has lost quite a bit of weight, is he making Cast Away 2?” @diddlywiddly asked: “Has Tom Hanks become really skinny or have I just forgotten he was always skinny?”

@Ginger_Ninja27 wondered: “Is Tom Hanks in training for a role?” while @SallyPrice4 said: “Tom Hanks is very beautiful.” And @EGadah said he “looks good.”

There was an outpouring of appreciation for Tom with @dettmer93 saying: “Tom Hanks is just the nicest guy in showbiz.” @Tommy_1972 said: “Tom Hanks is a diamond.” And host Emma said she wished the show was “two hours long.”

Just yesterday we found ourselves wondering if the new Universal Pictures take on the Snow White fairy tale, titled Snow White and the Huntsmancould cast known actors in all seven dwarf roles.

The reports yesterday were that Ian McShane (Deadwood, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) had been cast as the lead dwarf, Caesar, and that Oscar nominee Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Enemy at the Gates), Eddie Izzard (Shadow of the Vampire, Cars 2), Toby Jones (Harry Potter, Captain America: The First Avenger), Stephen Graham (Boardwalk Empire, Snatch), and Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, V for Vendetta) were all in talks for other dwarf roles.

This left one more, which has now been filled.

The wonderfully intimidating talents of Ray Winstone have been chosen for the role of Trajan, and the actor now joins some of the others in negotiations for a part. Winstone’s character would be the twin brother of Marsan’s Hadrian character, while Hoskins plays a blind dwarf named Constantine, Izzard will be Tiberius, the “biggest and burliest of the crew,” Jones is an easily scared dwarf named Claudius, and Graham an “angry-looking” dwarf named Nero. As you might of noticed, all of the dwarfs””who are warriors in this version of the tale, not workers””are named for ancient Roman emperors.

The movie stars Kristen Stewart (The Twilight Saga, Panic Room) as Snow White, who’s ordered killed by her evil stepmother (Charlize Theron) after escaping. The huntsman sent to kill her will be played by Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Star Trek), who ultimately ends up joining the princess and these seven warrior dwarfs and training her how to fight.

Winstone is perhaps best known for his role as Frank Costello’s (Jack Nicholson) right-hand-man, Mr. French, in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. He’s also appeared in The Proposition, Beowulf, Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skulland Edge of Darknessto name a few.

*Letitia Wright spoke to Variety on Sunday to update fans about the status of “Black Panther 2,” as well as discuss her controversial vaccine stance.

The outlet caught up with Wright at Kering’s Women In Motion dinner at the Cannes Film Festival, where she made clear that she has no regrets about the media firestorm she endured amid the COVID pandemic.

In 2020, Wright caught heat after sharing an anti-COVID vaccine video on social media. When asked by Variety what she learned from the criticism that came from pro-vaxxers, she said, “I’ve learned that in life, you just have to keep going strong with what you believe in, in terms of your talent, in terms of your desire to impact the world with your art, and that’s exactly what I’m doing and I’m so proud of myself and the movie that’s coming out this year. I’m so proud of it.”

For now, not much is known about how “Black Panther 2” but Marvel decided not to recast the leading role following the death of the film’s star Chadwick Boseman. Wright explained that the sequel will honor the actor’s legacy.

“It is an incredible honor for Chadwick Boseman, it’s jam packed with exciting stuff,” she shared.

“We honored him by committing ourselves to the story that he started, the legacy that he started with this franchise,” Wright told the outlet. “And we just committed every day to working hard, no matter what circumstances we faced—and we faced a lot of circumstances, a lot of difficult situations—but we came together as a team, and we poured everything into this movie, so I’m excited for you to see it.”

We reported earlier that Wright is reprising her role of Shuri in BP2 alongside returning cast Call Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba and Angela Bassett.

Director Ryan Coogler was writing the script for the long-awaited sequel when he learned the sad news that Boseman had died. The beloved actor passed away in August 2020 at age 43 after a 4-year private battle with colon cancer.

Director Ryan Coogler was writing the script for the long-awaited sequel when he learned the sad news that Boseman had died. The beloved actor passed away in August 2020 at age 43 after a 4-year private battle with colon cancer.

The release of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which stars Michelle Yeoh as the matriarch of a Chinese-American family thrust into a multiverse crisis, has been a surprise box office boon for arthouse distributor A24 since its wide release on April 8. Its next film, “Men,” which releases nationwide on Friday, may extend this momentum.

“Everything Everywhere” only needs to add another $3 million to its $47 million take for it to become the company’s best film yet at the domestic box office. This would be an impressive feat, as no other film from A24 released during the pandemic has graced its top 10.

Likewise, the film has achieved remarkable audience retention since its wide release. While major studio releases typically see weekend grosses fall around 50% after their debut weekends, “Everything Everywhere” has yet to experience a weekend drop greater than 40%. The film even saw weekend grosses increase twice after its initial wide release, though the first instance was aided by A24 doubling the number of theaters in which it was playing, per Comscore data.

The film’s directing duo known as Daniels’ last film for A24, “Swiss Army Man,” only grossed $4 million domestically, per Comscore. Acquired by A24 and shot in early 2020 on a $25 million budget courtesy of IAC and the Russo Brothers via their AGBO prodco, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was clearly intended to up A24’s ante at the box office before the pandemic set in and shut down theaters across the country.

Good showings for horror film “Midsommar,” awards contender “The Farewell” and Adam Sandler-led “Uncut Gems,” which net the company’s $50 million domestic bestalmost saw A24 break $100 million domestically in 2019. By contrast, family drama “Minari,” a major Oscar contender during the 2021 awards season, brought in just $3 million, per Comscore.

That was far less than the $28 million earned by prior best picture winner “Moonlight.” The realization that such lauded films as “Minari” could stay confined to a diminished exhibition climate undoubtedly fed into A24’s reported exploration of a $2.5 billion to $3 billion sale last year, with newer streaming entrant Apple apparently interested at one point ahead of its own winning Academy turn via “CODA.”

A24 has still released films like “On the Rocks” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth” through Apple during the pandemic via a deal set in 2018but the success of “Everything Everywhere” has given it enough of a visible presence at the box office to surpass mini-major studio Lionsgate’s 2022 cumulative gross so far.

A24’s 2022 domestic gross is just under $60 million vs. Lionsgate’s $52 million haul. Given Lionsgate’s current 2022 gross includes “Moonfall,” which cost $140 million to produce and was outgrossed by “Jackass Forever,” A24 seemingly has the chance to prove itself once again as a provider of low- to mid-budget fare that fills seats via word of mouth and critical endorsement.

Alex Garland’s psychological horror film “Men” has a good shot at picking up where “Everything Everywhere” is leaving off. A24’s top 10 earners count three horror films among them in addition to “Ex Machina,” Garland’s techno-thriller debut as director that earned $25 million in 2016. Plus, earlier 2022 slasher “X” already net more than $10 million for A24 ahead of “Everything Everywhere,” per Comscore.

It may not sport the action and fantasy-oriented flair of “Everything Everywhere” and will likely not earn as much, but “Men” continues A24’s proclivity for eerie, theme-driven horror and only counts two main roles: Jessie Buckley (HBO’s “Chernobyl”) and Rory Kinnear, who plays most of the film’s titular men.

As a result, “Men” doesn’t have a budget at the scale of “Everything Everywhere” and shouldn’t have to make as much to turn a profit for A24 if the horror formula works again.

Beyond “Men,” the distributor has family-friendly “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” and horror-comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” which stars “Saturday Night Live’s” Pete Davidson, lined up for summer dates, so A24 will maintain a frequent presence in theaters over the next few months before more films are dated for fall.

A near-$50 million film like “Everything Everywhere” isn’t much when compared with the likes of “Doctor Strange 2” or “The Batman,” the year’s top grossers so far. But the film has still grossed more than twice that of Michael Bay and Universal’s April actioner “Ambulance” and has yet to slow down considerably.

If A24’s streak continues, the majors will have much to study for their non-tentpole efforts.

EMILY PRESCOTT: Jack Whitehall’s ‘on the bun’ after walking out of a posh bakers without paying for £70 of treats

Most of us get excited by the prospect of a sticky bun. But Jack Whitehall was so keen to tuck into goodies from a posh London bakery that it seems he forgot to pay for them.

I’m told that the comic picked up a £70 box of treats at Buns From Home in Notting Hill – but was unable to settle the bill as the store’s card machine wasn’t working.

He was pointed towards a nearby cashpoint, and left with his buns, but never returned. ‘It was manically busy,’ says a ex-employee who was there. ‘We all make mistakes, but he could have come back another day.’

However, there’s no bun fight, with the bakery saying: ‘It’s buns on the house for all when our card machines are down, not just celebs!’

We tried to contact Jack’s team for a comment but got no response.

Ben’s good bash

The beaver-based installation he sponsored has just won top prize at the Chelsea Flower Show, and now Tory environmentalist Ben Goldsmith is staging a £500-a-head party to help save the dam-dwellers.

Wittily titled Saturday Night Beaver, though it takes place on Wednesday, the bash will be hosted by Joanna Lumley and Stephen Fry. Ben’s wife Jemima, left with him, will treat 150 guests at her London restaurant Wild By Tart to a feast, although she is seven months pregnant, while a folk band will perform Bring Back The Beaver, a song that Ben admits contains ‘a bit of innuendo’…

In the TV adaptation of his best-selling book This Is Going To Hurt – a diary of life on an NHS maternity ward – celebrity doctor Adam Kay was creator, executive producer and the model for the main character, played by Ben Whishaw. Kay even had a cameo role in one episode.

So why was he a no-show at a party the crew held at the end of production? In fact he wasn’t the only absentee as a number of people on the show seemingly didn’t go.

Not a healthy sign…

Mayfair goes top of the tables

Is this Britain’s poshest street party? While neighbourhoods across the country will be putting out plastic chairs and sarnies for the Platinum Jubilee, in Mayfair they’re laying out gourmet food and Earl Grey cocktails.

It will sprawl across the district on Thursday and Friday, with a huge table designed by aristo sisters Alice and Jemima Herbert, who run the ‘table-scaping’ firm LAY London, blocking North Audley Street.

‘We’ve never done a table that’s 200ft long before,’ Lady Alice, pictured left, tells me.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is expected to draw 20,000 visitors – even though there are only 150 places at the table!

We always love to root for our favorite on-screen couples, and that’s no exception with Stranger Things. Whether it be Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) or the pair we all want to turn romantic, Joyce (Winona Ryder) and Hopper (David Harbour), it’s easy to fall in love with some of these pairings.

As for Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), their love is on the rocks in Stranger Things season 4 volume 1, and it’s even heavily suggested that Nance will get back together with her former love interest, Steve (Joe Keery). Though all of the Jancy shippers out there are feeling disappointed (me included!), the good news is that Dyer and Heaton are actually an item in real life. Fans will know that the two actors met on set and have been dating for years now. Rumors first started that they might be dating in late 2016, and they made their first red carpet appearance together at the SAG Awards in 2017.

Now, fans are speculating Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton have taken the next step in their relationship and are actually married. But is that true?

Did Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton get married?

At this time, we don’t have confirmation that Dyer and Heaton are married. But here’s why people think that. While promoting Stranger Things season 4, a handful of the cast members got to play with puppies for an interview with BuzzFeed. They gave really great and fun answers and the video is just adorable, so we’d recommend any fan watch it! The end of the interview, however, is where viewers started to raise their eyebrows.

Heaton mentions wanting to adopt one of the puppies but that he has a flight right after so he couldn’t, to which one of the BuzzFeed employees tells him he can fly with a dog. Seemingly not knowing how to say no to such cuteness, Heaton says he’d “have to talk to the wife.” Of course, the comments of the YouTube video below have filled with fans calling attention to his mention of “wife.”

“Had a double take hearing that, did they actually get married? They’re so cute,” one comment reads, while another says, “Are we [really] gonna skip Charlie calling Natalia ‘the wife’ [crying emoji] how cute.” Watch the full interview below! (Heaton’s comment is around the 11:40 mark).

At this time, we’re going to assume that Heaton and Dyer are not married but perhaps they simply use cute nicknames. The fact that Heaton says “the wife” and not “my wife” has me thinking it’s just something to say rather than something literal. It’s all about the semantics!

As fans of the couple know, they are pretty private with their relationship and don’t often talk about one another. Their Instagram feeds do feature photos together, but they don’t post frequently. In an interview with Cosmopolitan UKDyer made a few rare comments about their relationship, noting that she doesn’t understand the obsession fans have with their relationship. “I’m always curious as to why it comes up. Why do people want to know about it?” she said.

If Dyer and Heaton are married or do get married in the future, don’t bet on seeing wedding photos shared on social media!

You can watch the two real-life lovebirds on Stranger Things season 4 volume 1, which is now streaming on Netflix.

Editor’s Note: Normally this week, Vanyaland Film Editor Nick Johnston would be down in Austin for South-By-Southwest’s film festival, catching as many premieres as he can in between tacos and fun walks down a crowded 6th Street. But SXSW 2021 is a virtual edition, so he’s at home like the rest of us. Luckily, he’s still watching all the films worth seeing, and reviewing them in our film section; check out his official preview here, and keep it locked to our continuing coverage as the fest unfolds.

Among the worst aspects of grief, the emotional triggers one becomes susceptible to following a loss are nearly the most ruinous. You’ll have a perfectly normal day, and you’ll see someone whose face ever-so-slightly resembles that of a lost loved one or says something in the same manner that a friend once did, and, like a thunderclap, you instantly feel the lack you felt in the moments when the loss was still fresh before it was scabbed over by time. But if a number of those make manifest in the right way at the right moment inside the same person, one might start to wonder if you know, it could, perhaps, be possible that the Buddhists were right: perhaps your loved one has been made flesh once again. Here BeforeStacey Gregg’s solid psychological drama (I hesitate to call it a “horror” film or thriller because it’s significantly more contemplative than that), delves deep into such an impulse and mines some genuine emotion from it.

Laura (Andrea Riseborough) is a working-class mom living with her husband and son in a small duplex in Ireland. She spends her days at her job, or taking care of her son, or cleaning fresh flowers, and replacing the dead ones at her daughter’s grave, gone far too soon at way too young an age following a horrible car accident. As mentioned above, she’s still suffering, but grief is no longer the central focus of her life, having become a fibromyalgia-like chronic condition to be managed. Yet the arrival of a young family in the next door sets off a whole new flare when the couple’s daughter starts to make odd connections, suggestions, and statements whenever she’s with Laura — say, telling her that “she’s been here before” near the road where her own daughter died — and, naturally, the bereaved mother begins to question her sanity. Could she really be her daughter, returned to her from the ether by some miracle? Or is Laura just nuts, driven to madness from grief?

Riseborough, one of our greatest and most fearless modern actors, is phenomenal here, fully immersing herself into this character without ever resorting to the sort of patronizing bullshit that defines similar films. It feels like you could encounter a woman like Laura drifting about the aisles in your local supermarket, and though she smiles at you when you pass, you can tell that there’s a dark sadness underwriting her every move. Perhaps it’s the distance from this tragedy that enables her to perform with the naturalistic manner she displays here — after all, she’s built up enough of defense not to weep openly at small reminders of her daughter — but her slow descent into considering the possibility that this girl may have some psychic connection to her lost love one or may even be her feels very honest. It’s just tremendous work and might be the kind of kitchen-sink performance to force non-genre critics to pay attention to just how great she is at what she does.

Gregg has a solid command of tone and pace, assisted by smart characterization and Riseborough’s skill — even though the film is barely 83 minutes long, we get a full sense of who Laura is and who, prior to all of this tragedy, she was — and though it moves slowly, Here Before never wears out its welcome. It’s wrapped up just a little too neatly for my taste, in which the goings-on are over-explained in order to fully exonerate several of the characters, but it’s significantly more interesting and messy than where one might have gone with this had they indulged their more theatrical instincts. And, in our trauma-and-grief-laden media landscape in the Trump-and-COVID era, it’s nice to see a rough reflection on how it genuinely feels for one to go through a painful loss without it being reduced to a trite plot point on the way to a longer destination or a justification for one’s style.

CANNES, France (AP) — Swedish director Ruben Ostlund’s class warfare comedy “Triangle of Sadness” won the Palme d’Or at the 75th Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, giving Ostlund one of cinema’s most prestigious prizes for the second time.

Ostlund, whose art-world send-up “The Square” took the Palme in 2017, pulled off the rare feat of winning Cannes’ top award for back-to-back films. “Triangle of Sadness,” featuring Woody Harrelson as a Marxist yacht captain and a climactic scene with rampant vomiting, pushes the satire even further.

“We wanted after the screening (for people) to go out together and have something to talk about,” said Ostlund. “All of us agree that the unique thing with cinema is that we’re watching together. So we have to save something to talk about but we should also have fun and be entertained.”

The awards were selected by a nine-member jury headed by French actor Vincent Lindon and presented Saturday in a closing ceremony inside Cannes’ Grand Lumiere Theater.

The jury’s second prize, the Grand Prix, was shared between the Belgian director Lukas Dhont’s tender boyhood drama “Close,” about two 13-year-old boys whose bond is tragically separated after their intimacy is mocked by schoolmates; and French filmmaking legend Claire Denis’ “Stars at Noon,” a Denis Johnson adaptation starring Margaret Qualley as a journalist in Nicaragua.

The directing prize went to South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook (“Oldboy,” “The Handmaiden”) for his twisty noir “Decision to Leave,” a romance fused with a police procedural.

Korean star Song Kang-ho was named best actor for his performance in Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda’s film “Broker,” about a Korean family seeking a home for an abandoned baby.

“I’d like to thank all those who appreciate Korean cinema,” said Song, who also starred in Bong Joon-ho’s Palme d’Or winning film “Parasite” in Cannes three years ago.

Best actress went to Zar Amir Ebrahimi for her performance as a journalist in Ali Abbasi’s “Holy Spider,” a true-crime thriller about a serial killer targeting sex workers in the Iranian religious city of Mashhad. Violent and graphic, “Holy Spider” wasn’t permitted to shoot in Iran and instead was made in Jordan. Accepting the award, Ebrahimi said the film depicts “everything that’s impossible to show in Iran.”

The jury prize was split between the friendship tale “The Eight Mountains,” by Charlotte Vandermeersch and Felix Van Groeningen, and Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski’s “EO,” about a donkey’s journey across a pitiless modern Europe.

“I would like to thank my donkeys,” said Skolimowski, who proceeded to thank all six donkeys used in the film by name.

The jury also awarded a special award for the 75th Cannes to Belgian directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, two-time Palme-winners and long a regular presence at the festival, for their immigrant drama “Tori and Lokita.” Swedish-Egyptian filmmaker Tarik Saleh took best screenplay at Cannes for “Boy From Heaven,” a thriller set in Cairo’s Al-Azhar Mosque.

The award for best first film, the Camera d’Or, went to Riley Keough and Gina Gammell for “War Pony,” a drama about the Pine Ridge Reservation made in collaboration with Oglala Lakota and Sicangu Lakota citizens.

Saturday’s closing ceremony brought to a close a Cannes that attempted to fully resuscitate the annual France extravaganza that was canceled in 2020 by the pandemic and saw modest crowds last year. This year’s festival also unspooled against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, which sparked red-carpet protests and a dialogue about the purpose of cinema in wartime.

Last year, the French body horror thriller “Titane” took the top prize at Cannes, making director Julia Decournau only the second female filmmaker ever to win the Palme. In 2019, Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” triumphed in Cannes before doing the same at the Academy Awards.

This year, the biggest Hollywood films at Cannes – “Elvis,””Top Gun: Maverick,””Three Thousand Years of Longing” – played outside Cannes’ competition lineup of 21 films. But their presence helped restore some of Cannes’ glamour after the pandemic scaled down the festival for the last two years.
